Just as every generation throws a hero up the pop charts, every generation has a collector who rushes in gobbling up cards without regard to price. Anyone remember Charles Nisenbau? Rocketslover? etc. etc. If you're that well off that a few thousand here a few thousand there is immaterial, then go for it and enjoy, but if you are concerned about making wise expenditures, slow down, take a deep breath, do some research, and learn to negotiate.
