I have finally finished my subset of the fourteen baseball subjects in the massive 1895 N566 Newsboy cabinet issue. The final card was the tougher of the two Ward poses, the "arms folded" pose.
![]() The group of fourteen can be viewed here: http://imageevent.com/uffda51/n566newsboycabinets My first Newsboy was the Doyle, bought at auction as a type card, in 1996. Be warned, type collectors, things can get out of hand. FWIW, anecdotally, I believe the Murphy is the toughest N566. * No actual whales were hurt during the creation of this post. |

![]() I don't know if it's the only known complete set, Jim, but I haven't heard of another. I wouldn't be surprised if a veteran collector somewhere out there has a complete set. Perhaps someone who specialized in Newsboys in general. Barry, for a whale, Newman was very light on his feet! |

Congratulations Bruce, I'm not aware of anyone completing the set. Some of the players seem to turn up just about every year while others rarely surface. To complete the N566 baseball players takes a lot of patience and the ability to bid high when a tougher player comes along.
Very well done. In my book, it doesn't get any better than photographic 19th century cabinets.

Congratulations Bruce. Thanks for posting them all together.
Here's a question for all - I have scans of 2 different Meekin's, one is Bruce's. Note the difference in the head angle relative to the card. Is this difference significant? It appears that the Meekin cards may be two pieces - with the face showing thru a round cut-out. Is that right? That could account for the rotation. But for most of the cards - I don't see a cut-out. That does sound right Mark. Also, doesn't it appear that the name on the cabinet to the right is a little lower than the other. So there are some cropping differences.

Hi Mark, the card like all cabinets is two pieces, the mat and the photo portion. But, I think you are asking is "the photo portiion" two parts. The answer to that is no. I think the photo portion on Meekin (as well as Van Haltren) is a photo of a photo, with the original photo being photographed with a round cut out on top of it.

Bruce....I would tell you to go on to the other 600+ Newsboy cabinets, but I don't want any competition! As to Mark......there are really subtle differences with a lot of the Newsboys.....cropping, titles etched onto the negatives versus not, mount differences, etc. While they are attributed to mid 1890's, I wouldnt be surprised it they were used for a number of years for the product. I have a couple hundred of the non-baseball ones and concentrate mainly on non-actress ones and there are definitely variation in those. Battleships, Bicycle Riders, NYC Scenes, Washington DC scenes, etc.
Great stuff Bruce.........not sure if you've seen the Newsboy site that Michael Reeve in England did but it's located at: http://www.newsboys.co.uk/ |

Some NET54ers who helped me in this quest were Bob Craik, Scott Brockelman and Joe Gonsowski. Thanks, guys! The Doyle was the first, as I said, picked up at an Oregon Trail auction. Most came from major auctions but 3-4 came from ebay. A couple came from the 2006 National.
Tom, I have seen the Michael Reeve info you cited. Great stuff. I do have a couple of non-baseball subjects but I'm not planning to go any further into N566-Land. As you mentioned, there are variations within the series in cropping, titles etched onto the negatives versus not, mount differences, etc. But nothing really significant to the degree of a T205 Hoblitzell no stats. Thank God! Joe P., now I'm onto the N172 Brown's Champions. I'm about half way there. ![]() |

I need help in finding a 1889 pin and I believe it was last sold at Oregon Trail Auction. Do any of you gentlemen know if Oregon Trail Auction is still in business and how I can get in touch with them so I can try to find the person that bought this pin. Great collection and thanks for any help! D.

Oregon Trail became Mastro-West for a brief time but that was about ten years ago. I have no idea what happened to them. Maybe someone else here does. Good luck!
