If anyone is still interested in this nonsense, the package as of now is in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Having spoken with a USPS supervisor last week, who was very noncommittal and cryptic with answers to questions, here is what I think is happening - the bar code label doesn't match the written address (mine) on the package. I believe the label, with the tracking number, indicates a Petaluma, California address. Maybe I am wrong. I think the USPS scanning equipment tried to send it to my physical address 3 times and a human being stopped that from happening 3 times. It was then flagged somehow and sent to California, and that delivery never happened either. Now I think it's being returned to the sender. We'll see.

Be that all as it may, I bought and have received 6 nice condition 1948 Bowmans. If these lost cards are in fact returned to Octavio, great, case closed.

When I see tracking issues like this, I've had a few myself, the two things I think of are 1 is it any wonder the USPS is losing money? and 2 why can't I put a stamp on myself and try for one of these fantastic trips around the country?

I think the bar code must have originally matched the address because it went first to Florida as it was supposed to and bounced around there for a while. Maybe it got damaged and now reads as Petaluma. In any case, it seems clearly on its way back to Octavio.

That's no excuse. If the bar code doesn't match the address, an intelligent being would choose to go with the address.

Not if the sorting is being done by machine reading the barcode.

Since the barcode (tracking) number is known, there should be a way to have USPS sorting machines pull it when they next scan it, so a human can straighten out the mess.

It's the USPS. An explanation will likely not be happening. They "did their job", and that's sometimes more than they do.

Finding a caring, conscientious USPS (or Canada Post) employee is such a rarity that whenever one is found, you almost want to adopt them into your family.

I consider myself quite lucky. Both my regular USPS carrier and the clerk who is usually at the Post Office counter are tremendous people.

Same thing for me as well. When my last package from eBay went wildly off-course (as I posted in this thread), my local post office worked to get it back on track and delivered. Good people doing a tough job.

There's over 600,000 USPS employees. I'm not sure why you would think there wouldn't be any bad ones as well as good ones in that large of a group. Like others have said, my local carrier and the people who work in my local office are all friendly and helpful.

For a while I was getting holiday cards intended for a different zip code, because the senders handwriting made the 2 at the end look like a 1. No real solution except to keep sending them back with a note, sometimes more than once for the same card.

The USPS processes around 320 million pieces a day -- the success rate is incredible when compared to other sectors. That we'd even consider sticking very valuable items — or in this case $15 in cardboard — in an envelope speaks to that.

I once read that USPS’s failure rate was lower than NASA’s toleration for failure in static mechanical parts and that’s always stuck with me. But it’s USPS, if they sold $.78 stamps with a $5 bill attached to it half of this board would complain about how it was folded.

That's the problem with really big numbers. Even if you're successful 99.99% of the time, there's still a big number of mistakes (in this case it would be 32,000 per day if my math is correct). What's amazing is that is seems like all of the mistakes happen to people on this board.

Is a month delay included in failure rate, or just pieces finally declared lost or irrevocably damaged? I've had a number of misadventures but I don't think anything I've ever sent didn't eventually get there, and the only packages lost were two from overseas.

I don't remember anything getting lost that I have sent or received over the years, only the occasional unnecessarily long journey. A long time ago I sold a card on Ebay to a buyer who claimed he never received it. I gave him a refund, but got a message back from him 2 to 3 months later that he finally received it. Turns out the postal deliverer accidently delivered to wrong address, and that was to an office building that had been vacated, so human error comes into play, but honest people made it eventually happen, and even the buyer was an honest fellow too.

Moral...plenty of honest and decent folks out there. Don't let a rotten apple spoil your appetite for apples.
