Default Opinions needed on Goudey Ruth

I own a few Canadian versions of this card (World Wide Gum Co.) and I am interested in adding some Goudeys to my collection.

I came across this one and wanted all your opinions on it:

https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...?itemid=203077

Doesn't it look too narrow?? Did the Goudeys differ a lot in size ??

Compare the left border of this PSA 5 to this one below:

https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...?itemid=203079

You can see the PSA 2 has a much larger left border.

Thanks

Default Opinions needed on Goudey Ruth

I would not be happy staring at the perimeter of either one of those cards for any length of time. Goudey Ruths are my favorite cards, but I don’t play in the EX range (except my 144 is probably EX “erased”). You can see how large the borders can be on this example below (not my card). Ultimately it has to meet your aesthetic requirements. As long as it’s in a PSA slab, it is whatever the slab says it is.

Amazing how there is often an inverse relationship between grade and border width

Sizes do show slight differences from that period among Goudey cards and Diamond Star cards as well. The cutting equipment wasn't as precise in measurements on those vintage cards compared to the modern ones.

For sure. That said, there is a much higher percentage of smaller ones in mid and high grade slabs than larger ones, it seems. And the thing is, I am convinced, the eye gets used to the smaller ones over the years.

Definitely my Goudey Ruth has left and right side borders that, even accounting for the one obvious visible flaw of this card (being off-center), are substantially larger than the 'eek' high grade Ruth Goudey cards in the REA auction. Even the smaller right border on my card appears to be larger than most borders on their top-notch examples.

I'm just wondering why the 2 cards are in SGC slabs with PSA labels.

I'm assuming that's a joke. They're taken on a black background, in case it wasn't a joke.

I did more research on this, and yes, it looks like they were cut all over the place. I found many under-sized examples online, even lower-grade:

But I still hate under-sized cards!

The wide border on the left really bothers me on this card

The centering is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

I'm not sure why people keep referring to this card as a Babe Ruth when the card clearly says "Erman Uth".

We know he loved the ladies, so it was probably due to overuse. Therefore, (don't know the clinical term) groinal attrition.

Some groupie probably stored Erman Uth's groin in a biscuit tin...perhaps there is still hope for its discovery.

The centering isn't that bad (for what is there). But that top right corner has some paper loss!! The top left corner doesn't bother me because there isn't anything to see.

I wonder...

Could you take a repro (there are certainly many of them, one of those "aged" ones), and carefully cut the missing parts (like a jigsaw puzzle),
and glue the parts together to make a "FrankenRuth"?

Brian would never go for that!

Not so fast...I had some scanning fun a while back creating some Thorpensteins. Enjoy!
