Default Different variations of the Hartland Mantle Lamp?

A seller on Ebay was selling original magazine ads that included the 1958-62 Mickey Mantle Harland Lamp. The thing is the design of that lamp is different from any example that I've seen before. I've attached a photo of the normal Hartland Mantle Lamp that I'm familiar with for reference.

The lamp in the ad has a round base and a smaller lampshade. I'm wondering if that was that something that Sports Pics put together themselves or do you think it as official from Hartland?

Hartland made the lamp both ways. You’d think the circular base version would be worth more, as it is rarer. But the rectangular base version is considered the more desirable and typically sells for more money.

Also… the rectangular base version was made with the lamp shade seen above, as well as a plain shade (same size, but without the felt bat/ball cut-outs. I personally prefer the plain shade, as it looks less “childish”.

Those are super cool, IMO. I’m glad I’m not a Mantle or Hartland collector….I’d have to have one!

Thanks Mark. Anyone have a photo of the round base version?

Nice, Mike! Now the picture in the ad looks like a possible third variation of the base.

It appears in the ad that the figure is an actual Mantle Hartland glued to the base. Every lamp I have seen is the gold figure version. Does anyone have one with the regular figure?

That's what it looked like to me. The image in the add isn't great but it does look like it has multiple colors.

And it also says it has a weighed metal base. I have never seen one of those.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that one doesn’t exist. Maybe they rushed out some ad copy and then changed their minds. Isn’t it “Fred” who ought to know?

Agree on both counts...

1. I do not think that version (with metal base and multi-colored Mantle) ever made it to market.

2. Fred is the guy who'll know for sure. Hopefully he will eventually chime in.

Default Hartland Mantle Lamps

OK Gary et. al.

You asked for it! Most of you know of my OCD when it comes to all things Hartland sports.

Here goes. I will try to list things in the order of the photos if I can get all the photos in this one post.

First as noted there are three "basic" Mantle Hartland lamps as some have noted above. A rectangular base with a PLAY BALL plaque on the front of the base. Oval Lampshade has crossed bats and ball. The shade clips onto a light bulb

Next, as above with a plain oval shade

And finally a smaller round base with a round plain lampshade that has a "screw top" to attach the shade to spindles or whatever they are called.

The first photo show those on one of my shelves along with some other things.

Now things get interesting....

The next two photos show a round base with the NY on the chest covered up with a diamond shape with a "T" with the NY on the hat also missing

Followed by another two photos of a round base lamp with the same diamond shape covering the NY on chest but without the "T" again no NY on cap. Complete with cobwebs!

We are then back to a rectangular base in the next three shots showing the NY on chest effectively "scraped off" this photo is out of order and can be seen second from the last. The NY on the cap is also scraped off.

One of my newer discoveries is a round base that is much thinker than any other I have seen. The first photo shows the thick base followed by a side by side comparison. The "normal round base is about 1 1/2" thick while the other is 2". Only one I have seen like this.

Now we get into the the Manny's Baseball Land "creations". Gary posted an ad above showing a "painted" Mantle mounted on what looks like a metal base. I believe this is most likely a mock up used to pre sell what was in the pipeline. I have never seen one on a metal base. That one shows the statue mounted on the metal base.

However if you look closely at the next ad photo you will see a statue that is mounted on a gold base which is then attached to the metal base. The ad also states "with official team emblems" Scroll to the right to see the small ad

I believe the next three photos show one of the Manny lamps. Note the emblem on the wood base. What is interesting is the "Mantle" statue is not really a Hartland per se in that it is solid not hollow as are Hartlands.Pretty bad paint job too! No NY on cap or chest and the lampshade is screwed on.

And the final mind blower at least to me is another Manny's ad offering not only a baseball lamp but an anemic looking football lamp and a basketball lamp! Can't believe any of these were ever produced. But who knows??

WHEW!!

Wow. Thanks Fred. If anyone was going to have the answer, it was going to be you.

Every time I see photos of your collection, I'm amazed.

I wonder if the one of one, thinner wood base could have been turned on a basement lathe by someone needing a base?
