OK, time for the August version, albeit a couple days early. My wife is out with friends, leaving me time to play with my cards and drink beer. Again, I'm going to list a bunch of 1972 Topps cards up for auction. However, I don't take cash...you can only bid with a scan of a card in trade. Since I collect T205 and T206 Sovereigns, those bids will tend to get higher weighting in case of multiple bids on the same day. If there are no bids at the end of the day (10PM Mountain Time), I'll add some more cards for the next day. The bids must be pre-WWII cards (no strip cards), but condition doesn't matter to me. I reserve the right to not accept a bid for whatever reason, but I'm generally not too picky. Shipping is on me, and you pay to pop yours in an envelope. Questions?
Scans are provided to give you an idea how I grade, plus they're fun to look at. Here's the list (includes all cards from each day's post, 72 total): 69 Roger Freed NrMt 85 NL Batting Leaders NrMt 86 AL Batting Leaders NrMt 87 NL RBI Leaders NrMt 94 AL Pitching Leaders Ex 96 AL Strikeout Leaders NrMt 138 Mike Kekich ExMt 141 Mets Rookies ExMt 170 Vida Blue IA ExMt 171 Darrell Evans NrMt 176 Tom Haller IA Vg 181 Ed Kranepool NrMt 196 Mel Queen ExMt 198 Charlie Hough Vg 202 Scipio Spinks NrMt 204 Tommy Helms NrMt 217 Roger Metzger NrMt 218 Eddie Kasko ExMt 229 World Series Game 7 NrMt 232 Giants Rookies NrMt 235 Merv Rettunmund NrMt 237 New York Yankees NrMt 248 Tom Bradley NrMt 250 Boog Powell NrMt 251 Checklist 264-394 Vg 256 George Foster NrMt 257 Tigers Rookies Ex 258 Randy Hundley NrMt 262 San Diego Padres NrMt 264 Tommy John NrMt 267 Dave Concepcion ExMt 286 Gene Alley NrMt 291 Hal McRae NrMt 313 Luis Aparicio Ex 323 Earl Weaver Ex 325 Mel Stottlemyre NrMt 329 Roy Foster NrMt 346 Jim Fregosi BP NrMt 354 Tom Murphy NrMt 357 Woody Fryman NrMt 360 Dave Roberts ExMt 366 Jimmy Rosario ExMt 381 Chicago White Sox Ex 401 Jim Nash NrMt 417 Tom Hall NrMt 422 Ray Lamb NrMt 426 Ken Singleton IA NrMt 428 Tito Fuentes IA ExMt 433 Johnny Bench Vg 450 Mickey Lolich ExMt 453 Barry Lersch ExMt 461 Tim Cullen NrMt 463 Bernie Carbo NrMt 466 Norm Miller NrMt 469 Ron Herbel NrMt 493 Bob Bailey Boyhood Photo Vg 496 Bud Harrelson Boyhood Photo NrMt 497 Jim Perry Boyhood Photo Vg 499 Vicente Romo NrMt 500 Joe Torre Fr 501 Pete Hamm Ex 504 Ed Spiezio Vg 505 Mike Marshall NrMt 507 Fred Gladding NrMt 508 Elrod Hendricks ExMt 509 Don McMahon ExMt 510 Ted Williams MGR Vg 511 Tony Taylor NrMt 513 Lindy McDaniel Ex 514 Ted Sizemore Ex 516 Oscar Brown NrMt 517 Ken Brett Ex Take Care, Geno ![]() Last edited by HercDriver; 08-15-2016 at 04:39 AM. |

The funny thing is, I remember Terry Steinbach, as an All-Star MVP in 1988. I was in my 6 week, ROTC boot camp with the Air Force, in Dover, Delaware. Somehow, we managed to sneak out of the dorms the night of the All-Star Game, and watched it at a local establishment. We were scared to death we were going to get caught. I remember it being a boring game, but Steinbach hit a homer to get the MVP. Anyway, I did 23 years of flying for the Air Force after that...not sure what Terry did.

Here's a few more! Herbal happens to be the player with the lowest batting average of any major leaguer with at least 100 at bats, checking in at .029. Is it just me, or does it look like somebody photoshopped Brick Tamland's head on Herbel's body? I wonder if he ever killed a guy with a trident...

Here's today's additions! Kasko managed the Red Sox to a second place finish in 1972, a half-game out of first. That seems a bit weird, but they did not make up lost games to a brief player's strike that year, so the Sox just lost out to a scheduling quirk.

Wednesday morning's offerings! Is it just me, or does it look like Woodie Fryman was trying to sneak up on the camera man, maybe to give him a wedgie or something... but he turned around quickly and got the shot?
And in the category of "That's the most ridiculous thing ever," I present this about Mickey Lolich. In 1971, the year commemorated on this leader card, Lolich pitched 376 innings. Do you realize how unachievable that is today? Let's plug that number into the 5-man rotation of today. In 162 games, a starter would get 32.5 starts if he pitched every fifth start. So if you did that today, pitched 32.5 games, or every fifth day... do you have any idea how many innings you would have to average, per start, to get to 376 IP? The answer is 11.5 IP/start. Yep, over eleven innings per start, for the whole year! I'm pretty sure nobody is coming close to that number anytime soon. And it's not even the post WWI record... Wilbur Wood beat him by 2/3 of an inning the next year. That's just crazy... I'm tipping an Odell Brewing Drumroll American Pale Ale to Mickey Lolich. I'd eat a donut if I had one. 94 AL Pitching Leaders Ex 357 Woody Fryman NrMt 381 Chicago White Sox Ex ![]() Last edited by HercDriver; 08-10-2016 at 02:30 AM. |

OK, I'm a little early for Wednesday's installment, but I have to get up early...so here it is:
426 Ken Singleton IA NrMt 461 Tim Cullen NrMt 401 Jim Nash NrMt Is that a fur-lined batting glove that Cullen has on? Is that what allowed him to hit .220? In 1968, Cullen was traded from Washington to the White Sox for Ron Hansen. Halfway through the season, the White Sox traded him back to Washington. For Ron Hansen. Those are the kind of moves that win GM of The Year awards... ![]() Last edited by HercDriver; 08-11-2016 at 05:01 PM. |

Here's a few more for today! I was crushed when I heard the Cubs had traded Bill Madlock to the Giants...we haven't had a third baseman since then, until now. But Murcer quickly became a favorite, so I guess it worked out for a Cubs fan with low expectations anyway...
