CLOSED!! 1972 Topps Reverse/Trade Auction...August version, Day 16!
OK, time for the August version, albeit a couple days early. My wife is out with friends, leaving me time to play with my cards and drink beer. Again, I'm going to list a bunch of 1972 Topps cards up for auction. However, I don't take cash...you can only bid with a scan of a card in trade. Since I collect T205 and T206 Sovereigns, those bids will tend to get higher weighting in case of multiple bids on the same day. If there are no bids at the end of the day (10PM Mountain Time), I'll add some more cards for the next day. The bids must be pre-WWII cards (no strip cards), but condition doesn't matter to me. I reserve the right to not accept a bid for whatever reason, but I'm generally not too picky. Shipping is on me, and you pay to pop yours in an envelope. Questions?

The funny thing is, I remember Terry Steinbach, as an All-Star MVP in 1988. I was in my 6 week, ROTC boot camp with the Air Force, in Dover, Delaware. Somehow, we managed to sneak out of the dorms the night of the All-Star Game, and watched it at a local establishment. We were scared to death we were going to get caught. I remember it being a boring game, but Steinbach hit a homer to get the MVP. Anyway, I did 23 years of flying for the Air Force after that...not sure what Terry did.

Here's a few more! Herbal happens to be the player with the lowest batting average of any major leaguer with at least 100 at bats, checking in at .029. Is it just me, or does it look like somebody photoshopped Brick Tamland's head on Herbel's body? I wonder if he ever killed a guy with a trident...

Here's today's additions! Kasko managed the Red Sox to a second place finish in 1972, a half-game out of first. That seems a bit weird, but they did not make up lost games to a brief player's strike that year, so the Sox just lost out to a scheduling quirk.

Wednesday morning's offerings! Is it just me, or does it look like Woodie Fryman was trying to sneak up on the camera man, maybe to give him a wedgie or something... but he turned around quickly and got the shot?
And in the category of "That's the most ridiculous thing ever," I present this about Mickey Lolich. In 1971, the year commemorated on this leader card, Lolich pitched 376 innings. Do you realize how unachievable that is today? Let's plug that number into the 5-man rotation of today. In 162 games, a starter would get 32.5 starts if he pitched every fifth start. So if you did that today, pitched 32.5 games, or every fifth day... do you have any idea how many innings you would have to average, per start, to get to 376 IP? The answer is 11.5 IP/start. Yep, over eleven innings per start, for the whole year! I'm pretty sure nobody is coming close to that number anytime soon. And it's not even the post WWI record... Wilbur Wood beat him by 2/3 of an inning the next year. That's just crazy... I'm tipping an Odell Brewing Drumroll American Pale Ale to Mickey Lolich. Here's a few more for today! I was crushed when I heard the Cubs had traded Bill Madlock to the Giants...we haven't had a third baseman since then, until now. But Murcer quickly became a favorite, so I guess it worked out for a Cubs fan with low expectations anyway...
