Admittedly, I got this in late September, but I wanted to start October off with a BANG! This will probably get trumped by some amazing REA winnings later this month (by others), but I couldn't be more pleased w/ my pick-up, which came from a fellow board member (thanks Bruce G)!!
This is my new favorite card in my collection (by a long shot): ![]() ![]()

Four tough upgrades to my 1933 Goudey set.
![]() ![]() ![]() Dykes and Manush are from the more difficult low series, and just happen to be the two cards in the entire set that have variations. Malone is one of the hardest commons to get in high grade. Herman is a tough Hall of Famer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the nice words on the O'Rourke CDV. Ironically, this morning I got my second-favorite card in the mail today. I like that this cabinet uses the same image as the one-of-a-kind 1894 Alpha Photo Engraving card. Now you all can see why I've been selling so much stuff lately:

Derek-Great pick-up. I have never seen O'Rourke on a Warren CdV. What's interesting to me is the "O'Rourke" notation on the front and the Warren identifier on the reverse. The Barnes CdV that I have from this photo shoot is also identified in script on the front and has the same distinctive Warren identifier on the reverse. Most of these CdVs had "Warren" printed on the front below the image. Given the similarity of the player's names written on the front, it would seem the same person (player) owned both of these CdVs.

Thanks all.
Gary - this O'Rourke was originally part of the 1991 Sotheby's "Copeland Auction". I believe other Warren Studio CDV's from that collection had similar hand-written notation on the front. Unfortunately, I don't have that Auction Catalog (although I would love one for my records!!). Perhaps another board member can enlighten us. P.S. nice avatar ![]()

The Copeland sale had 3 Warren cdv's and all had the same writing on the front---McVey, George Wright, and Derek's O'Rourke. There was a Barnes illustrated in the catalogue, but it was not a Warren and it is not actually Barnes. I have no idea who wrote the names, but it would be fun to find out. As Derek knows I can't scan to the forum but could send a scan to anyone who is interested, but it would come from a local library. There is an older net 54 thread on the Warren's and does seem to be minor differences in the poses and bigger differences in the mounts. The photographs seem to be uniformly spectacular.

I was amazed at how nice these Hindus were when I got them. They have the new holder, so they were freshly graded. As a buyer, I love getting under-graded cards, but it kind of scares me as a submitter. Got the EPDG in a fun trade with a fellow member (thanks!).

Very nice, Raymond! I take it baseball card purchases are qualified purchases towards eBay bucks? If so, I might have to sign up.

Ronald and Jesse-really nice Goudey additions. I love those cards. The first two years are my favorites.
Derek-that's a beautiful pic. Do you find these cdvs on eBay, or somewhere else? I'd love to add a couple of those to my collection when I begin to branch out. Tony, congrats on adding the Old Mill. That's one of my favorite cards in the entire set. All three of Lajoie's cards are excellent. I can't wait to own them, but the portrait most of all. Luke-you've got a great eye. While you're adding these tougher backs, you're not sacrificing anything. These cards might be lower on the technical grading scale, but they hav fabulous eye appeal. And that to me matters more than anything. Great start to the month, guys.

Don't have this one in hand yet (hence the poor quality pic) but its on the way. George "Grin" Bradley (Sioux City) 1889 Uhlman Cabinet with the same pose as his N172. I don't own the N172 in the scan, just added it to show the pose. This is my first cabinet, hopefully more to come!

I know it looks rough, but that is a 1913 Oakland Oaks team issue Mitze, hard to find in any condition. I also added a 1911 Obak Sutor to my Sutor run, and my first Briggs. One very happy PCL collector (and the Briggs). Thanks to a board member for the awesome PCL cards.

Bill - the CDV was from a private sale. These particular ones from Warren Studios are very tough to find (near impossible might be more like it). The cabinet came from Legendary Auctions. Luke - I'm not a t206 guy, but those Hindu's look awesome!

Wow, really nice stuff this month so far. Derek - I'm speechless. Those look like they belong in a museum, congrats!
Being part of this forum for over a year and a half now and seeing all the different "cards", I've starting expanding my collection to include Cabinets, Postcards, Exhibits, Premiums, etc. My latest purchase can't compete with what has been posted here so far, but I think it's neat. I like when the players are identified even if it can't be verified:

Not sure if you have researched the names, they are all from Hancock, Wayne county, Nebraska men circa 1910-11 based on the little girl and her age. Last edited by sb1; 10-03-2014 at 10:43 AM. |

This 1905 American League Publishing Co. envelope pictures Hall of Famer Napoleon "Larry" Lajoie. Its enclosures - a letter he initialed and a promotional order form for a baseball guide he was in the process of publishing for the 1906 season - are shown in the American League Publishing Company gallery, http://www.sportingoregon.com/p799838731 . Click on any image for a better look and description. (My apologies for the less than stellar cell phone pictures of the inserts.) The same image of Lajoie is used on baseball postcards that the American League Publishing Company published in 1907 showing the Cleveland team, and in 1908 depicting just Lajoie, both of which can be viewed in that gallery.

Well, I spent too much - again - last quarter - $500 is the most you can earn and it's mostly @ 2%, but they had double, triple, and quadruple point days periodically - and if you have the good luck to have something you want come up during that time, all the better...certainly better than nothing. When I saw that I had reached $500 in EBucks, I curtailed my spending, until late last night when those became available.

I know this is slightly post war and apologize. But very excited to have won this 1948-49 Toleteros card of Francisco Coimbre. He was a great hitter and 2 time Negro League All Star. After his career he became a scout for the Pirates and is credited with convincing them to take a chance on Roberto Clemente.

Thanks. I know he might not be a household name but Coimbre is a legend in Puerto Rico. They named a museum after him in Ponce. Here's a quote from Satchel Paige on what it was like to pitch to him:
Satchel Paige stated “Coimbre could not be pitched to. No one gave me more trouble than anyone I ever faced, including Josh Gibson and Ted Williams.” Last edited by packs; 10-04-2014 at 01:54 PM. |

Thanks PACKS for the scan of Mr. Coimbre's Toleteros card, and the brief history of his enormous contribution to the Pirates. I learned something from you! Also, I appreciated the quote you provided from Satchel Paige on pitching to this gentleman. That puts his significance in a much brighter light. I don't know how you display your cards, but a small "museum type" of paragraph consisting of the words you just shared with us would be very beneficial to anyone who cast a glance at your beautiful card of Francisco, then read what you wrote. No one with an ounce of baseball history appreciation would fail to be immensely impressed by the man and a rare baseball card of him.
Your one card carries a great deal of weight and significance, mated with your knowledge of its importance. ![]() A shout out of appreciation to you, bro. Have a peaceful weekend. --Brian Powell Last edited by brian1961; 10-04-2014 at 02:50 PM. Reason: I got respondents mixed up. |

Here are 4 cards that I bought at a local show today - thanks Tony for the Monster Cards! I saw a Bresnahan earlier in this thread. I forgot (did I ever know?) that he finished his career with the Cubs (player manager in 1915). Not to turn this into one of those HOF threads, but if not for the shin guards would he have been elected (in 1945 by the Veterans Committee)? I like the McGraw pose in his sweater.
