Just perused the online catalog and....Wow. The 19th century material alone was jaw dropping. The fact that the 1838 Olympic Club constitution has even survived all these years is nothing short of amazing. |

Amazing offering by REA again. The Olympic Ball Club constitution and the two 1914 Ruth cards are incredible. |

I just finished going through REA's online catalogue; it was like a day at the museum. I'm blown away. A signed baseball by the Dalai Lama? Are you kidding me? Incredible stuff. |

Leon (or anyone else), pardon my fuzzy eyes, but which one is Ruth in the postcard? Is he second from the right on the top row? If so, he was much skinnier back in 1914. |

Maybe I'm just a naive boob but is there really enough money out there to support the vast quantity of high end material that is appearing in these auctions? |

Steve- it's all supply and demand. There's no doubt the amount of material on the market is unprecedented. At what point the supply exceeds the demand is anyone's guess, but it's starting to look like there is too much stuff out there. |

I think the DL's rookie year was around 1575 or so (Jim correct me if I'm wrong as this is from memory). As he has been reborn a number of times since then, his rookie year remains that early date. |

Surely Jim B can enlighten us as to the history of Lama rookie status. If anyone here has the Lama's rookie, it's him....so he's got that going for him...which is nice. |

Barry, I think it was the Far Eastern League. Every time Tibet played a road game in Bangkok, it was a Thai ball game. (Place smiley icon here). |

The first Dalai Lama was alive from 1391-1474. The current Dalai Lama, the 14th, was born in 1935. He was enthroned as the Dalai Lama at the age of 4. He was given power as the political ruler of Tibet at 16 in 1951. So an autograph from his rookie year could either be seen as 1939 or 1951. Since he probably did not know how to write yet at the age of four, I would go for 1951 as the rookie year. His training from 1939-1951 could be seen as his time in the minors. It would be like a Baltimore News Ruth. |

There is no question the estimates are deliberately low so the auction house can show that a lot far exceeded its expectation. I think Sotheby's does it too. But unless I'm wrong not too many of the other baseball auctions have them. |

I thought the current Dalai Lama is considered the 14th reincarnation of the first Dalai Lama. If that's the case, his rookie card would have to be from the 1391 era. |

Paul's right, his "true" rookie would be from 1391. Talk about vintage. It's still pre-war, but it's pre-war-of-the-roses. |
