Posted By: Seth B.
Leon (or anyone else), pardon my fuzzy eyes, but which one is Ruth in the postcard? Is he second from the right on the top row? If so, he was much skinnier back in 1914.

By the way, this auction is unbelievable, especially the 19th century stuff. I think there's something for everyone; these guys do a truly magnificent job finding things to include.

Posted By: Dan
Overall SHOCK and AWE is all that I can say. How can folks keep pace with both of these wonderful auctions at the same time?

Wife: "Honey, what happened to all the money we had in the bank?"
Husband: "What money?"
Wife: "You know what I am talking about"
Husband: "Ahhhh, I am sure it is around here somewhere"

I am sure that some folks have some pretty serious arguments coming their way considering how many really nice lots there are in both auctions. Thank God that I haven't been bitten by the Sepia Tone'd Devil of the 1800's.

Posted By: barrysloate
Steve- it's all supply and demand. There's no doubt the amount of material on the market is unprecedented. At what point the supply exceeds the demand is anyone's guess, but it's starting to look like there is too much stuff out there.

FYI REA is up for viewing
Posted By: barrysloate
No, I haven't seen a downward trend at all.

But just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

I don't think there will be a shortage of people bidding on the finest known Tango Eggs set, but what about all the mid-grade second tier material that keeps appearing in almost every auction? That's where I think the market could get softer.

Posted By: Bruce Babcock
What year is the rookie year year for the Dalai Lama?
|
FYI REA is up for viewing
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
I think the DL's rookie year was around 1575 or so (Jim correct me if I'm wrong as this is from memory). As he has been reborn a number of times since then, his rookie year remains that early date.

Posted By: JimB
The first Dalai Lama was alive from 1391-1474. The current Dalai Lama, the 14th, was born in 1935. He was enthroned as the Dalai Lama at the age of 4. He was given power as the political ruler of Tibet at 16 in 1951. So an autograph from his rookie year could either be seen as 1939 or 1951. Since he probably did not know how to write yet at the age of four, I would go for 1951 as the rookie year. His training from 1939-1951 could be seen as his time in the minors. It would be like a Baltimore News Ruth.

FYI, the signature on the ball says, "Tenzin Gyatso" which is a portion of the very lengthy name he was given when he was enthroned.

JimB

P.S. Nobody is pulling up the Caddy Shack joke yet. You guys are lagging.

Posted By: martindl

Fantastic items, top to bottom.

I do get tired of the auction houses' low-ball estimates. I'm not singling out REA because most all seem to do it, and I know its done for marketing reasons, but regardless.

Anyway, not trying to put a damper on this superb auction or REA (because I think they're absolutely the best there is), I'm just sayin'.
|
FYI REA is up for viewing
Posted By: barrysloate
REA is the only auction house to provide estimates.

If you are referring to very low starting bids, there is a reason it is done. People need to qualify, and it is important to have as many qualifiers as possible. I know I can put in as many bids as I want the first day, even on a hundred or more lots, and have no risk of winning any of them if I don't come back the last night to bid again. If those opening bids were too high, I would be much more conservative and bid on far fewer lots.
|
FYI REA is up for viewing
Posted By: martindl
Barry,
I may be confused on who provides estimates, but I thought there were more that do so. I also bid in a lot of none sport related auctions where estimates are provided and invariably the estimates are quite a bit lower than items are going to go for. At the end of the auctions the auction house can then say "record auction, 40% higher than estimate".

I was not referring to opening bids.
|
FYI REA is up for viewing
Posted By: barrysloate
There is no question the estimates are deliberately low so the auction house can show that a lot far exceeded its expectation. I think Sotheby's does it too. But unless I'm wrong not too many of the other baseball auctions have them.

Posted By: Paul
I thought the current Dalai Lama is considered the 14th reincarnation of the first Dalai Lama. If that's the case, his rookie card would have to be from the 1391 era.

Posted By: Ryan Christoff
Paul's right, his "true" rookie would be from 1391. Talk about vintage. It's still pre-war, but it's pre-war-of-the-roses.

By the way, I did have the rookie Caddyshack post on this thread, although I think only Jeff noticed.

-Ryan
