Picked up the lower right W514 card recently, of Wahoo, so figured what the heck, start a thread...

What would be the correct terminology for that card?--A bleed-through?

This thread is getting just a little more attention than my Dietsche Cubs PC one did a few weeks ago with zero responses
![]() Strip cards are tough to love. Poor images, typically poor condition and overall sort of ugly. But, is a great way to collect variety and HOFers affordably. I can see the fun in collecting those with back advertisements too. The Wahoo is cool.

Odd, isn't it, that the color and contrast of the ghost on the reverse seem to be better than the original on the front.

Even the lowly W9316 set is interesting to me.
Brian (couldn't get my W9316 scan to load up, so here is an interesting T206) Last edited by brianp-beme; 11-26-2014 at 07:37 AM. |

True - the ghost is the wrong way for a WST. The color of Sam's skin also appears to be different on the front and the back. Are the colors layered in these cards like in lithographs?
Fred's answer that it might be the result of ink bleeding through the card has legs - perhaps the color change is due to a reaction with whatever the back of the card was against? |

It wouldn't make any difference if it is a bleed through or wet sheet transfer the image on card back would be facing the same direction. I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time. |

As I looked at it earlier I was thinking it was the wrong direction. Now, after a few more cups of coffee, not so sure. It is interesting nonetheless and that is why I got it. Here are some more strips too...a hodgepodge ![]()

Cool thread. Strip cards are fun to learn about because they have so many different styles. Also, it's an affordable way to buy a big time player.

Curious if it has any period writing on it. Several W516s from the 11-20 strip have been found with a message on them from "L.A. Becker", who I take to be a school teacher in the early twenties. I don't think I have Nehf.

I have now updated my list with Nehf. If I am not mistaking I have had a few other of these but they were the same player so I kept this one.

Is it possible that there are strip card printer scraps?

Strips are fun. Those back stamps are very, very tough. I have a Wool's boxer but no others. My contributions to the thread:
These are nearly impossible to find. ca. 1925. Most of the ones that pop up are actually cut 4 on 1 Exhibit cards, and those are rare to begin with. They came in horizontal strips of ten cards. The stock is thinner and slicker than Exhibit stock. ![]() ![]() A 4 on 1: ![]() The analogous boxers, uncut: ![]() These are from a multisport issue. There are five baseball players in the set: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
