Interesting strip cards from early 1900s...

Picked up the lower right W514 card recently, of Wahoo, so figured what the heck, start a thread...

Great card Leon--

What would be the correct terminology for that card?--A bleed-through?

Tao_Moko 11-26-2014 04:44 AM

This thread is getting just a little more attention than my Dietsche Cubs PC one did a few weeks ago with zero responses:). I thought I'd help keep this one alive.

Strip cards are tough to love. Poor images, typically poor condition and overall sort of ugly. But, is a great way to collect variety and HOFers affordably. I can see the fun in collecting those with back advertisements too.

The Wahoo is cool.

Odd, isn't it, that the color and contrast of the ghost on the reverse seem to be better than the original on the front.

EvilKing00 11-26-2014 06:45 AM

Thats an awesome back!

I forgot to put T206 in the title. This thread would have marathon legs if I did. The Wahoo seems a bit different than a regular wet sheet transfer as the ghost on the back is facing the wrong way?

Jobu 11-26-2014 07:33 AM

True - the ghost is the wrong way for a WST. The color of Sam's skin also appears to be different on the front and the back. Are the colors layered in these cards like in lithographs?

Fred's answer that it might be the result of ink bleeding through the card has legs - perhaps the color change is due to a reaction with whatever the back of the card was against?

brianp-beme 11-26-2014 07:35 AM

W9316 would be more widely collected if they looked exactly like this

Even the lowly W9316 set is interesting to me.

Brian (couldn't get my W9316 scan to load up, so here is an interesting T206)

I don't have any wet sheet transfer cards but how is the ghost image facing the wrong way?

It wouldn't make any difference if it is a bleed through or wet sheet transfer the image on card back would be facing the same direction. I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time.

Hey Ben
As I looked at it earlier I was thinking it was the wrong direction. Now, after a few more cups of coffee, not so sure. It is interesting nonetheless and that is why I got it. Here are some more strips too...a hodgepodge :).

That's what I was thinking. Either way it came from an image that's facing the same way, so the direction of it shouldn't depend on whether it was transferred from the front or the back.

Leon,
Can you post a picture of the back of that W516 Nehf?

I can go dig it out Ed, but curious of your curiosity? And after checking my list of cards owned I might not own it anymore as it's not there. This scan was taken from my website and those scans are only 99% accurate. I could have been lazy and not updated the scan when I sold or traded it. I have to check another card too so I will see about it. If I have it, it's in one of many boxes and stacks. :o

Cool thread. Strip cards are fun to learn about because they have so many different styles. Also, it's an affordable way to buy a big time player.

Re: Interesting strip cards from early 1900s...

Curious if it has any period writing on it. Several W516s from the 11-20 strip have been found with a message on them from "L.A. Becker", who I take to be a school teacher in the early twenties. I don't think I have Nehf.

These are my only 2 strip cards. Hoping to find a cheap beater raw/authentic Ty Cobb.

Here is a double Harris.

I have now updated my list with Nehf. If I am not mistaking I have had a few other of these but they were the same player so I kept this one.

Tao_Moko 11-26-2014 03:48 PM

Is it possible that there are strip card printer scraps?

brianp-beme 11-26-2014 08:52 PM

W573

Some would say all strip cards are printer's scrap. I, however, am not one of these people. An old scan...if I remember correctly all of these are various versions of W573 cards, including the sepia and green tints.

brob28 11-26-2014 09:03 PM

Guys, help me out with this. If that is a wet sheet transfer or bleed through, would it make sense that the reds and greens would show up more? It seems to me that those are bolder colors on the card, vs. the grey shading & flesh tones that seems to be showing. Just wondering if there's something more to it. Printer's scrap perhaps?

Exhibitman 11-27-2014 04:25 AM

Strips are fun. Those back stamps are very, very tough. I have a Wool's boxer but no others. My contributions to the thread:

These are nearly impossible to find. ca. 1925. Most of the ones that pop up are actually cut 4 on 1 Exhibit cards, and those are rare to begin with. They came in horizontal strips of ten cards. The stock is thinner and slicker than Exhibit stock.

The analogous boxers, uncut:

These are from a multisport issue. There are five baseball players in the set:
