March 2014 Pick Ups

OK, I purchased this 12:15am.
Very happy to find a copy. It doesn't seem that they come up for sale that often. It's a first edition of Stan Carlson's "Lou Gehrig Iron Man of Baseball."



It will pair nicely with the promotional brochure I picked up a couple years ago in a trade with a Board member

I just picked up this great original photo of Johnny Vander Meer warming up prior to pitching in the 1944 Army vs. Navy Pacific World Series. The backdrop of literally thousands of active duty military personnel in the background and barracks buildings makes for an interesting visual, IMHO.
This photo came directly from the Johnny Vander Meer family estate.

The Navy crushed the Navy in a 9 game series that was played in the Hawaiian islands during late September through October 1944 and was the brainchild of Admiral Nimitz who thought this would be a great way to entertain troops and keep moral up. In total, the Navy won 6 (2 wins by Vandy and 3 by Virgil Trucks), the Army won 2, and one game ended in a tie.

This photo is a perfect compliment to several other items that I have related to Vander Meer's hitch in the Navy in WWII.

Here are two other Vander Meer related to the 1944 Pacific Army Navy World Series. The first is a dated ticket stub to the second game in the series. Vandy was the winning pitcher, defeating the Army 5-2. The other item is an original scorecard to Vander Meer's 2nd and final win in the series, allowing the Navy to take a 5-0 start to begin what ended up being a lopsided trouncing.

I guess you'd call this piece chalkware. It stands over 14 inches tall and weighs about 4lbs. I don't know anything about it other than I think it will make a wonderful display piece. Between his feet I can barely make out "D Soto" or something similar. Perhaps that the sculpture's name??

PS NOTE: Upon receiving the photo today 3/8 I noticed that the photo had an inscription on the back that say's "Navy Hickam Field, Honol. Haw". This photo was taken prior to Vandy's 1st win on 9/23, 1944 (Game 2 of the Army Navy Pacific Word Series). Cool!

Picked up this Charlie Jamieson game used bat recently. It's side-written, just not positive on what is written. Jamieson was on the 1920 Cleveland Indian Championship team, led the league in hits in '23 (beating Ruth, Speaker, and Cobb), and even came in 3rd for the MVP in '24.

I wanted to post this in the March pick-ups to show the outstanding work that Matt (MGHpro) was able to do on the bat...thanks Matt! Here are the before/after photos.

Joe benson game used bat from 2011, photmatched to have been used to collect his first and second career hits. The baseball is the actual ball he hit for his second career hit(1st career double).

Nice pennant Scott. I picked this one up on eBay earlier today. It features Willie Mays in Puerto Rico where he played with Roberto Clemente and the 1954 Santurce Cangrejeros.

I don't think he sold it. I bought it off a collector over on GUU. I'm guessing the twins sold the bat at one time and the baseball was probably sold by the tigers because they were playing the tigers.

Sounds like a good thread opportunity. I'm sure we would get to hear the story about Hank Aaron getting tricked into signing a ball that he probably would have 'retrieved' from the owner if he had known what it was.

I heard a radio talk-show host ask a football player the other day if he "kept the ball" (referring to a touchdown ball), and the player responded that he tossed it aside - in the moment, he hadn't thought to keep it. Equipment managers normally grab such items, tag them and save them on the sidelines, but who knows what ball actually gets given to the player;e.g-Dwight Clarke's 'the catch'.

Brock, is GUU your main 'go-to' forum for game-used discussions? I ask because I had some questions/comments about game-used, joined GUU, posted a few times, and experienced dead silence. Guessing that I'm simply getting the newbie treatment and that I need to post about 30-40 'great jersey of that 2nd string punter!' comments in order to earn the right to be responded to.

I agree with everyone. My favorite Gehrig photos are the ones of him with kids . I was a little torn about buying it because it shows such a somber look on his face and I usually gravitate towards the photos of him smiling.

The Giants have a couple of those....pretty rare. At one point, I ended up with flickers of Drysdale and Koufax and couldn't give 'em away. Those LA D**ger guys are cheap!

I believe there is one other known example, but yours is the only one I've actually seen pictured. I got mine about a decade ago. It wasn't cheap, but has remained one of my very favorite figural pieces.

I love the gothic look and gigantic hands (supposedly, Wagner had huge hands). I suppose these could be bookends, due to the shape and flat back sides. But they certainly don't seem heavy enough to support many books. Much more decorative than functional, if indeed that's the case.

I just refer to mine as "The Honus Wagner Statue". Glad to see he has a long-lost sibling out there Thanks for posting!
