March 2014 Pick Ups
OK, I purchased this 12:15am.
Very happy to find a copy. It doesn't seem that they come up for sale that often. It's a first edition of Stan Carlson's "Lou Gehrig Iron Man of Baseball." http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=14365 It will pair nicely with the promotional brochure I picked up a couple years ago in a trade with a Board member http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=14366 |
Vander Meer 1944 Army vs. Navy Pacific World Series photo
4 Attachment(s)
Nice Gehrig pickup, Mark!
I just picked up this great original photo of Johnny Vander Meer warming up prior to pitching in the 1944 Army vs. Navy Pacific World Series. The backdrop of literally thousands of active duty military personnel in the background and barracks buildings makes for an interesting visual, IMHO. This photo came directly from the Johnny Vander Meer family estate. The Navy crushed the Navy in a 9 game series that was played in the Hawaiian islands during late September through October 1944 and was the brainchild of Admiral Nimitz who thought this would be a great way to entertain troops and keep moral up. In total, the Navy won 6 (2 wins by Vandy and 3 by Virgil Trucks), the Army won 2, and one game ended in a tie. This photo is a perfect compliment to several other items that I have related to Vander Meer's hitch in the Navy in WWII. Here are two other Vander Meer related to the 1944 Pacific Army Navy World Series. The first is a dated ticket stub to the second game in the series. Vandy was the winning pitcher, defeating the Army 5-2. The other item is an original scorecard to Vander Meer's 2nd and final win in the series, allowing the Navy to take a 5-0 start to begin what ended up being a lopsided trouncing. |
Great stuff Scott. Well done!

Scott,
Thank you for the kind words. That is an awesome group of items that relate to an event from which I bet there isn't a lot of memorabilia left around. Very nice job. So have you been breaking into the Vandermeer family estate? Best, Mark Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |

Amazing stuff Scott.
Just read an article today that said all Vander Meer family members are changing the locks on all their homes! Greg |

Heavy Chalkware Baseball Player
2 Attachment(s)
I guess you'd call this piece chalkware. It stands over 14 inches tall and weighs about 4lbs. I don't know anything about it other than I think it will make a wonderful display piece. Between his feet I can barely make out "D Soto" or something similar. Perhaps that the sculpture's name??
|
Absolutely killer photo, Scott.

I posted this on the book thread, but I am very excited about it so I figured I would post here as well. I purchased the 1841 chapbook below for 20.00 at an antique shop Friday afternoon. Although the book is entirely about animals, there is a small illustration on the front cover of a boy swinging a bat (see below for a close up scan). This book becomes my oldest "baseball" related item, more than ten years before an 1852 newspaper I have that describes a game.
These chapbooks, or others very similar to mine, also by Babcock, were once offered for sale on the BST here for about 75.00 each (8 or 9 years ago?). I think a member found 10-20 of them. I regretted that I never purchased one, but now that regret is gone. I love antique shops! Alan |

Game used bat restoration
2 Attachment(s)
Picked up this Charlie Jamieson game used bat recently. It's side-written, just not positive on what is written. Jamieson was on the 1920 Cleveland Indian Championship team, led the league in hits in '23 (beating Ruth, Speaker, and Cobb), and even came in 3rd for the MVP in '24.
I wanted to post this in the March pick-ups to show the outstanding work that Matt (MGHpro) was able to do on the bat...thanks Matt! Here are the before/after photos. |

Your Johnny Vandermeer memorabilia you posted on the earlier pages of this thread are truly unbelievable as well..Its always a pleasure talking and trading emails with you. Phil |
Great photo of Johnny V! It really captures the vastness of the field. It's easy to forget how big the field feels when you're on it.

BTW, I had the same feeling when I first saw the photo. I also loved the fact that you got to see the other player's gloves left out on the field. It really brings you back to a very different era in our history. Cool! |
Beautiful job on the bat restoration

Thanks Scott and Phil. There were around 3000 people in attendance and from what I can tell 2000 or so were issued tickets. They charged for automobiles to park in the outfield but not sure if they were given a special ticket for that or not. Great Koufax artwork too Phil! |

Couple of new Williams pieces

Set out with a goal of filling my 2 yr old sons room in a hitters hall of fame motif, but it seems that Ty & Ted have taken up all of the real estate thus far...
Added the following this month 1-2 beater 1939-46 salutation exhibits including the tough 9 showing.. 2- a very cool minneapolis (large) newspaper ad announcing the correct answers & the winners of the contest. Ted is in a 1938 Millers uniform and coincidentally was #9 in the contest! |

Joe benson game used bat from 2011, photmatched to have been used to collect his first and second career hits. The baseball is the actual ball he hit for his second career hit(1st career double).

Nice pennant Scott. I picked this one up on eBay earlier today. It features Willie Mays in Puerto Rico where he played with Roberto Clemente and the 1954 Santurce Cangrejeros.

Damn. That seems like an item that the player should own. |

I heard a radio talk-show host ask a football player the other day if he "kept the ball" (referring to a touchdown ball), and the player responded that he tossed it aside - in the moment, he hadn't thought to keep it. Equipment managers normally grab such items, tag them and save them on the sidelines, but who knows what ball actually gets given to the player;e.g-Dwight Clarke's 'the catch'. |

To go with the benson bat, I also own the Bat Justin Smoak used to collect his first career hit and also his first career homerun with. |
Wow, the Smoak bat is another great item.
As far as GUU goes, I would have thought that someone would have at least said 'welcome' when I first posted. |
