As I recall, the theory is that PSA used the slabbing of a questionable T206 Wagner (McNall-Gretzky) to make a name for themselves. What works once...

Interesting follow-up question... I presume that one of the reasons that they didn't want it slabbed outside of their presence was that they were worried about mishandling / damage to the card. Now that this $0.50 card is protected in a slab, I wonder if they would be more likely to wait in the lobby while a respected grading company evaluates it. |

Here's the funniest part...

The article states that the two owners stayed clear of the other mainstream TPGs. I think it was the other way around. |
