As I recall, the theory is that PSA used the slabbing of a questionable T206 Wagner (McNall-Gretzky) to make a name for themselves. What works once...

danmckee 08-25-2011 06:22 AM

That is a joke, blatant fake and a garbage grading company. That won't hurt a thing in the hobby.

agreed.

Interesting follow-up question...
I presume that one of the reasons that they didn't want it slabbed outside of their presence was that they were worried about mishandling / damage to the card. Now that this $0.50 card is protected in a slab, I wonder if they would be more likely to wait in the lobby while a respected grading company evaluates it.

Leon 08-25-2011 06:32 AM

wow

Lots of idiots in that scenario.

Piratedogcardshows 08-25-2011 06:32 AM

I was hoping to see a picture of this slabbed beauty but this is all they have on there "database" unfortunately.http://wwww.acagrading.com/en/grading/resultats3.php

"It is what we call an unreleased version of the card," said ACA Grading owner Martin Brouillard. "It is a controversial card, and people are scared of it."
Controversy resolved: who knew that the card was an unreleased version? What will these self proclaimed hobby experts think up next?

vintagetoppsguy 08-25-2011 07:10 AM

Here's the funniest part...

"ACA agreed to let the two owners be present during the evaluation. Cobb and Edwards claim they didn't want it to be encapsulated alone and, thus, steered clear of the hobby's mainstream authenticators."

The article states that the two owners stayed clear of the other mainstream TPGs. I think it was the other way around.

Exhibitman 08-25-2011 07:16 AM

Well, as was once said, you will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the general public.

e107collector 08-25-2011 07:17 AM

Unbelieveable

This will probably end up as the "featured" lot in the next Coaches Corner auction:)

Wite3 08-25-2011 07:48 AM

Everyone send in your wagner reprints to ACA and let them get graded...watch the two fools complain that they are devaluing their card and theirs is the only true wagner, blah blah blah....

teetwoohsix 08-25-2011 07:58 AM

Man, it's amazing that these two are still hanging on to that stupid reprint like it's going to make them rich

Note to owners of card : IT'S FAKE AND EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS IT. :D

alanu 08-25-2011 09:01 AM

I just want to see a picture of them smiling and holding up the slabbed card.

A picture from their website of who they are..............

I feel much better about them because I always try to live an experiment out of common run.....but, then again, don't we all..........

BillyCoxDodgers3B 08-25-2011 09:36 AM

I haven't heard that slogan since the last time I bought genuine cubic zirconias from Taipei.

Looking at this price book from 1993 it looks like fake cards have been graded as long as originals:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Basebal...#ht_675wt_1185

I am not sure who graded the cards because there is no name on them but they are clearly fake cards.

vintagetoppsguy 08-25-2011 10:41 AM

It looks like ACA authenticates autographs too. Maybe there is hope for my 500 HR Club autographed baseball afterall.

Maybe Piedmont will start using ACA :D

cobblove 08-25-2011 11:04 AM

.

I wonder if they have a problem with sending it to an auction house now. Or will they sleep on the couch of the auction house.

Those look like Acu-Card holders, the name is on the back. I have a Delong graded by them. It is genuine. But it may be trimmed as it's the first card in the set and it's graded a 7. The cuts also look too clean and new. It was very inexpensive, maybe even less than a nice looking SGC A.

I can't see slabbing reprints even to use as props for a book cover. The potential bad PR is a killer.

They were pretty early in the grading business. If it's the company I'm thinking of they were local to Boston and even did grading at in-store events.

True. Considering the collectibles CC sells, the Wagner will barely qualify.

barrysloate 08-26-2011 01:48 PM

The latest business model seems to be someone claiming to be a grader or authenticator with not only no skills whatsoever in grading or authenticating, but with no real interest in exercising any ethical standards whatsoever. These businesses are no more than fronts who collect big fees from people that need the services of these sleazy operations. What a crock of shit.

These guys are authenticators the same way Tony Soprano was a waste management expert.

Too funny, Chris. Thanks for sharing. Bogus card in a bogus holder. Just too much! :D

Best,

I love how the owners are pedigreed on the holder just like McNall Gretzky! :p

iwantitiwinit 08-26-2011 05:39 PM

Ha....ha, unreleased version, ha....ha. Really? P.S. I'm watching the Yankee game and I know why AJ Burnett stinks, every single pitch and I mean every single pitch is 93 miles per hour. Does this guy know how to vary his speeds its unbelievable everything is 93 miles per hour.

I recently read a very similar pitch in the Nigerian email scam.

Looks like one just popped up:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Curt-Simmons...#ht_499wt_1153

cobblove 08-26-2011 10:06 PM

Hey at least they told somewhat the truth. Its an unreleased version. Meaning it didnt come from the famous T206 set right?

uffda51 08-26-2011 11:09 PM

My head hurts!

Brouillard based his grade in part on research done by paper expert Walter Rantanen, who examined the card in 2003 at the request of Edwards and Cobb and concluded the paper stock was consistent "with being from 1910."

Brouillard also relied in part on printing expert Arnie Schwed, who also examined the card for Edwards and Cobb and said it was definitely not a counterfeit.

Steve Allen once coined a word he called "dumbth." All of these people possess mass quantities of dumbth.

What were the companies started when the deal was out there to start a grading co licensed from someone? I think the patent holder on the slabs?
If I recall, it was something like 5 territories/licenses for 15000 each.

That Wagner looks incredibly fake.
