I’d love to know if the Twins is 56” or 68.” Seems weird that the Giants would be a foot shorter. Maybe the seller screwed up the description?

ASCO was a legit pennant company. Those 19” player picture pennants are awesome and highly mysterious. Are there any known checklists? Years of production? A Mickey Mantle sold for near $2,000 awhile ago. Might there be a Willie Mays? |

Kyle (Domer05) and I were exchanging some thoughts on how much we both appreciate college pennants, and especially the burgee type (fish-tail) style. Thought I would share this scrapbook photo from 1916 of this huge pennant - I estimate it's about 6 ft long.

I love it Joe. Those felt burgees from the 1910s were so cool. Still waiting for a Notre Dame burgee to surface....
Wonder why the style never really caught on with MLB pennants afterwards? I can only imagine it's because it was more time-consuming to cut one than the standard triangular pennant?

I doubt this listing escaped you guys, because nothing much does. I noticed the D**gers pennant. Pretty unusual, I think. I also think it's from probably their first 4-5 years in L.A. The Giants pennant is not rare at all. I think the White Sox is common, as well, although maybe the "White Sox Park" variation?
P.S. Never a good idea for a seller to sell dissimilar pennants as a lot, IMO.

Actually the Giants isn't as common as you think. This one has better detail in the graphics than the more common version you see all over eBay. There are about dozen of the low quality graphic versions on ebay right now. None of this one....now that this auction has ended. Speaking of Giants pennants with subtle differences...Did this Giant switch to a low carb diet? He appears to have slimmed down over the years.

Going back to our recent discussion of various ways photos are affixed to photo pennants....would staples be an original way or was this one done at a later date? If this one is "wrong," does anyone have an example of the proper one? I do like this pennant, with "Souvenir of Shea Stadium," "Let's Go" and Mr. Met.

Additionally, I’m not sure I recall a picture pennant that isn’t cloth. Maybe the LAD had one on felt? Must be that the glue sticks better on cloth, I dunno …

Not the greatest condition, but it was a cheap variation I didn't have. And look...when I put it in a sleeve with another one tassel pennant, they both look complete!

We can add Birmingham Barons to teams with the sliding runner design, now believed to be made by Epstein (right?). I believe I heard that MLB is going to be playing a game or games at Rickwood field in the future.

Yeah, I went to grad school in Alabama and watched a decent number of baseball games in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham (Hoover). I was there after the Michael Jordan days, which I heard were pretty crazy. Never saw a game at Rickwood. And the price was right on the pennant. I've never seen it or any other vintage Barons pennant before.

Rob and I just got back from the Houston Tristar show and I was able to buy this very rare Houston Colts pennant from Rick H. I usually avoid pennants with tassel damage, but this one is so rare that I got it anyway. I've never seen it for sale and had only seen a picture of it one other time.
I've posted a pic of the the more common version below the new pickup (although all Colts pennants seem rare) |

That's a great looking vintage pennant. I know we have some contributors who can say more about rarity (it's rare, I just don't know how rare) and possible value. Might help to see the tip.

Some great pennants guys. bandrus1 did you buy that 1933 Tigers pennant?
My latest pickup isn't as exotic but it's a nice clean example. 1970 Senators.

Bought this out of curiosity the other day, to learn (with the much appreciated help of a board member) that this dates to 1908-10 based on the Spalding tag. Detroit Tigers? Missouri Tigers? Will never know I suppose. Though I’m not sure if college pennants with only the mascot name were ever a “thing”.
Mr. Domer, what do you know about Spalding pennants? Last edited by thetahat; 02-09-2024 at 02:29 PM. |

For example, these two were definitely made by Repco; and yet they bore this more contemporary looking "Spalding" label on the reverse.... Why the updated label? It was required (by Repco, no doubt) that the legalese, "Patent Allowed, Patent Applied For" appear on the product to protect the patented method (a.k.a., the "Udall Process") used by Repco to print such detailed graphics on felt.

Spalding also distributed other pennant makers' products throughout the 1910s. Here's a 1916 excerpt from one of their catalogues showing that year's offerings....
Note that the model "S" retailed for $1.50. Adjusted for inflation, that's over $40 in 2024 money. So, not cheap! I've seen other pennants with more traditional Spalding labeling, like yours Greg, and they featured that same woven spine look. I do agree: yours likely pre-dates 1910.
