Here are two of the three 1937 versions. Obviously some condition issues with my “winner” one, but it doesn’t really bother me as much as it bothers others. Only the version with names has a tag on the rear.

I agree with you, Jason. The style of Mike's Cubs pennant is more consistent with 1945 (not '38), based up its close resemblance to Yankee and Brooklyn Dodger pennants from the latter 1940s.

FWIW, I believe these Shear-labeled pennants from '37 and '38 were all manufactured by Trench and represent some of their first ever baseball pennants. Mike's Cubs pennant, perhaps from 1945, and also with a Shear label, strikes me as a natural evolution of that "insert ballpark name" artwork/series.

This is the one thing that sometimes burns me out on “the hobby.” There are some great fellow collectors….some of them participate in the thread. Those types help each other out, alert you of stuff that fits your collection and might even “flip” something to you for no profit. But, unfortunately, there are also cut throat, win at any cost type collectors out there too. Those types seem to have an almost pathological need to “get stuff.”

That Winners pennant is so cool. Had it fit into my collection, I would have grabbed it, too. It’s a “bird in the hand” situation. In no way does it stop you from upgrading if you find a better one. That’s basically my philosophy for any super rare thing I want.

Here's some new arrivals for me. They aren't quite as valuable as Marc's Oakland Pennant but I was happy to get them at a more reasonable price

Yes! But mine in the video is black.

And I think I actually said that if that's a fastball coming in and his bat is still in that position, he's in a lot of trouble (or something to that effect). Maybe not the most badass depiction of a batter, but a very cool pennant none-the-less.

As more circumstantial evidence, I give you one of these where someone painted the year 1938 at the end. Granted it could have been done years later, but more than likely it was done shortly after purchase. And yes it has the Shear label with the 146 Park Row address.

I wonder if HA can wiggle out of it with their description. It is original in the sense that it isn’t a copy of an actual pennant from that time period. It’s a new design. Of course it’s an original circa 1998 pennant, in fact I bought this and others in person from the Mitchell & Ness Philly store that year in their half price Super Bowl Weekend sale. …

Yes, it just illustrates how many are out there. This is a different one from the Heritage example, and there are hundreds more that will all sell for under $30.

No offense to the winning bidder in HA (or to those who bid him up), but anyone who can't immediately tell the difference between this and something that's truly vintage probably should find another hobby. Or perhaps they should stick to a spending limit of under $50. Even worse is the fact that Heritage would run with it. Someone there had to know what it is.

That is strange. I will also add that none of my 40’s versions of similar Yankees American League Champions have any labels on the rear like yours has, but do have similar field and design elements. Maybe they kept the Yankees with the “older” logo and went for a newer version with the Cubs? Who knows.

The strange thing is I have Yankees pennants that I believe to be from 1941 to 1943 that are different designs as well.

Whoever tried to steal that pennant out from under you also bought this rare Dodgers pennant within minutes of its listing, for a great price. No issue here. Given who the buyer was I considered contacting the seller and offering double the price, but that just isn't something I could do and live with myself. I like this stuff, but not that much.

Thanks for sharing that article. Oxford Pennant makes the best pennants on the market today, no question about it. The gentleman interviewed in your piece, David Horesh, co-founded the company. He's a class act. More importantly, he really values the history of pennant making; and he's committed to making pennants the old fashion way, i.e., the way we collectors would prefer to see them made.

If the novelty pennant is going to survive the 21st century, it's gonna be because companies like this found a way to revive the public's interest in triangular flags....

I came across this ca. 1976 Philadelphia Eagles pennant, by ... Trench? ASCO? Not really sure.

I know we've discussed the mysterious "VET" mark before as a possible concessionaire's mark associated with Veteran's Stadium; but what about this one being marked, "NB"??

Maker's mark? Concessionaire's mark? Philadelphia-area sporting goods store?

if only we knew a pennant collector with knowledge of the Philadelphia sports scene in the mid-1970s....

I was bidding on it as an upgrade to mine (hard to believe that more than one of these actually survived). The REA example is undoubtedly the finest example to exist, and someone got a raging deal.

If I didn't already have one, I would've bid this pennant up lots higher than it ended up selling for. Incredible graphics, and a single-day event that took place 108 years ago!

Take a gander at the photos below, sent to me by the great forum member Dave E.... Hard to believe that a Car Company would not only pay, but persuade two MLB teams to come to Toledo for an exhibition game just to entertain the factory workers. Equally incredibly, the players all walked in procession from the factory to the field alongside the auto workers!

Imagine seeing Matty pitching to Cobb with Crawford on deck... yes, that really happened! A different day and age for sure...

That photo is great. I was an underbidder for the 1915 pennant but I managed to pick up the 1914 version. I'm on the lookout for photos of the 1914 game.

I agree with Mark in that I thought the prices were pretty reasonable for a 109 year old piece of history.

What's everyone's thoughts on the 1914 Braves Pennant in the same auction. I thought it was in pretty amazing condition considering it's age.

There is a crowd pic from the 1916 WS and fans holding dated Brooklyn (Robins? Superbas?) pennants … I think it was posted here. It was the NL version of the 1916 Red Sox which has surfaced in auctions. But I’ve never seen the Brooklyn outside of that picture …
