1971 Topps Winner - Steven M. Wilke

Last Friday night, I learned what it feels like to see Bigfoot.

I bought a bunch of 1972-1975 Topps baseball cards from a guy I used to work with. He had bought the cards in packs as a kid and has had them ever since. They were in 3 ring binders and as I was going through the cards, there was a 1971 Topps Winner - Steven M. Wilke.

Has anyone seen another example? I believe it is the only one now known.
Does anyone know if this could have come from a pack?

I'm very excited, and very confused as to how this card ended up in my possession.

I've emailed Mr. All Things Topps Dave Hornish and I think he is as perplexed as I am. Any light anyone can shed would be much appreciated. See attached scans.

NOTES:

The 1971 Topps Winner baseball cards were part of a Topps Baseball Card Contest. To enter the contest you had to fill out an entry blank provided by the storekeeper. After filling out the entry blank with the information as seen on the back of the card (pictured above) Favorite teams, Players, Hobbies etc.. the form was to be mailed into Topps with a photo of your kid.

Twenty-five grand prize winners got their pictures on a "Real Baseball Card" and 1,000 contestants received a Full color Major League Card poster. The short print cards were inserted into a very limited number of 1972 baseball card packs. The 25 winners each received one sealed box of 1972 Topps baseball cards, with each wax pack having the winners card inserted into it. They also received 1,000 additional cards of themselves, to hand out to friends and family.

There are only 19 winner cards known of the 25 Grand Prize winners. The additional contest winners will be added to the checklist as they surface.

I think the checklist is known to be a total of 19 cards. This is only because of an uncut sheet featuring the 19 examples that has recently surfaced. I don't know of anyone who has seen the Wilke, Scatena, Edgerly, or Cox cards in cut form.

What do these cards go for these days? Back in the day they would occasionally show up, usually a few at a time, but you never seem to see them anymore.

True that. Although I suspect a few of the the packs got out into the wild. Winners are technically the only Topps baseball inserts from 1972!

Those 9 were mine at one point. I won a lot of 10 in a Kevin Savage auction, kept a type and eventually auctioned the rest. I had four others I sold eventually as well.

There are actually 10 for auction. Would be odd if they were yours as the consignor only had a vague idea of what they were, which would be odd if they were purchased "intentionally"

May not be the same person. Were there ten? One must have snuck in... I had 14 of the 15 known (at the time). Now it would be 14/19...

I picked a few of the more unique names from the list of cards show and did a Facebook search. There is no doubt that the faces staring back at me were the same kids.....only allot older. It would be cool to have the cards autographed.

I thought so too, and in this day and age it shouldn't be too hard to find them. Problem is they may want to keep it if they don't have any.

Will anyone in here claim to be the winner of any of these? There was also an April Bole and a Steve Wilke (neither of which had ever been offered for sale before to the best of my knowledge) on EBAY. Anyone claiming those?

When recent sales draw attention and show increased value, more always seem to surface. I was bidding on several as I need an type example for my collection. Sadly, I missed on all.

I bowed out when bidding broke 350 because I didn't want to exceed my set personal limit. I am now a bit bummed at my line of thinking because it may be a bit before one that I like comes back around.

In addition to the 10 in Birmingham there were 3 different ones on eBay, the Bole girls and Wilke. I think April and Wilke went for $1200 + and $800 +

I have two of them and at these prices that may have to suffice.

Straight up, Allen Suck Jr with the purple wide collar 70's pimpin' outfit is the beast in your auction. Undiscovered gem IMO.

First a 1969 Bowie Kuhn card that I had no awareness of and now the 1971 Topps Winner cards that I never knew about. This site is fantastic for this sort of thing and makes me keep coming back.

I never even knew that a Topps contest even existed when I was 11 in 71. I would have done that in a heartbeat.

I imagine they handed them out to friends and family and did other dumb kid stuff with them. I would be surprised if any of the people in question had very many, if any, of their cards left.
