Default Best Looking T206 Commons?

Posted By: Jared

I'm looking to purchase 3 raw T206 commons to frame for my work office, and am looking for suggestions on the nicest-looking ones. My requirements are simple:

a) Cheap - trying to stay under $25 for all three
b) Action shots
c) High-quality artwork on the card

Anyhow, rather than spend hours thumbing through the hundreds of T206's and scouring eBay for them, I figured I'd ask you guys! Sorry if something similar has been asked before.

- Jared

For action shots I love Pelty, horizontal pose. All the horizontals are exceptional, but might cost a little more than $25. Since you are framing, look for nice fronts with back damage. Those are more affordable.

I started my T206 collection with the same idea, but I was going to frame about 10. Limiting it to 3 is next to impossible in my opinion. I was trying to limit my collection to about 10 raw T206s. Now 3 years later, I have over 200 graded T206s. Be careful, a small project like yours could grow and grow and grow.
With that being said, if I had to hold my collection to 3 raw T206s, my vote goes for:

Kissinger
McLean
Taylor

Just my 2 cents.......

These three always come to my mind:

Bell (Brooklyn)
Lavender (Providence) - the yellow background is exceptionally bold on this example. It makes Jimmy "pop" off of the card.
Phillippe (Pittsburg)

If you want action, I recommend Merkle throwing. I also like the classic Larry Doyle with the bat. And there is always Fielder Jones with hands on hips. Not sure what you'd have to pay for them, though.

Jared,

The Leifield is one of the most colorful commons in the set. It has great colors and is one of my favorites.

Here is a scan to view it.

In terms of pure weirdness, which wasn't one of your categories but I think it makes it a cool card, the Spike Shannon has always stood out for me. He apparently wears a size 4 hat.

The first one that came to my mind was Leifield (pitching) also.

Konetchy (glove near ground) would be my second choice.

The horizontal Pattee is a classic as well.

I've always thought the Brooklyn team has a greater number of nice looking cards compared to the rest of the team sets.

I hate to interrupt a thread but on Tim's Owen Wilson is the "Old Mill" type that is visible on the front bleed from the back or a slight over print? Just Curious.

I like the background colors on the Laporte and Warhop
T206 LaPorte/Warhop

I think the Hemphill pose and framing of the shot is cool, and I like the background on the Ford.

This is exactly how I collect the T206 set - by aestethic.
My subset of classic images includes a few HOFers, so please excuse those, but please consider these (Some already mentioned):

Hans Lobert (one of the very few with rich, darker tones)
Lajoie w/bat (HOF)
Keeler w/bat (HOF)
Chase, pink portrait
Nap Rucker, throwing
Liefeld, throwing (unmatched variety of colors)
Ewing (stunning sunset)
Donovan, throwing (sunset is off the hook!)
Merkle, throwing (great artistry)
Wheat (HOF)
Chappie Charles (excellent red, and a sweater)
Beals Becker (The red-white-green = xmas card)

As the choices above demonstrate, most T206s are really nice, which is one of the reasons the set is so popular. There are so many great cards, that I think you'll find more of a consensus on the few "odd" looking poses.

Since you are looking for action shots, maybe limit yourself to a throwing pose or a pitching pose, with a sunset background. Just about any three of those cards, framed in a row, will look great. Then, do a bunch of searches on eBay, and find three that are lower condition and within your price range, but present well (no heavy creases). Maybe look for cards with heavy back damage, but nice fronts.

You can do the same thing with three T206 portraits, with the same background color, or red-yellow-orange, etc.

Just don't permanently mount the cards in the frame! With enough backing, the cards should stay put without having to be glued.

I agree I have placed some SGC graded cards in a frame and they are applied to the frame with Elmer's Poster Tack- break off a little piece and attach it to the back of the holder or in this case a screw-down or card saver and apply it to the back of the frame- they stay in place and clean up easily when you decide to change them!
