An ebay auction recently ended for an 1887 Oshkosh team PC (w/ Dummy Hoy, Tommy McCarthy, and Frank Selee):

I know that an 1887 Oshkosh Cabinet card has been floating around recently and that it recently went at auction for $6k+. I was close to bidding top dollar on this particular PC, but did some research (thanks to the many outstanding websites of forum members), and decided to not bid on this particular auction because I feel that the PC is not authentic...or if it is "authentic", then I believe it was made in the 1920's (not pre-1900) based on the AZO stamp back design. Any thoughts on this? I hope my suspicion is right and that I didn't just miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime!!! The auction ended at <$250.

I dont know postcards, but I think you made a good choice. Something just didnt look right about it to me. Moreover, I have bought from this seller a few years back on ebay and gotten a reprint that was not listed as such.

Would be a great piece if real.

According to my records, that particular style AZO back is from between 1924/25 to the late 1940's.

that definitely makes me feel a lot better about not bidding...the first bid was from a Net54-proclaimed "Postcard expert", so it got my juices flowing a bit...I def. didn't want to miss out!

I was actually quite surprised when I saw that Dan Y. (gtp.ro) had bid on that with an opening $149.99 bid. But I've seen him bid on some headscratchers before.

I won the card, and already knew it was from 1925 - 1940's before bidding. Earliest Frank Selee that I can afford. As for being a "headscratcher", to each his own.

Photographic postcards didn't even exist in 1887. You don't really start seeing them until post-1900.

The first American real photo postcard was 1901. The US mail and postcard designs were regulated by Federal law, which is why design changes can be pinpointed to specific dates.
