With one more stolen base, Tigers CF Curtis Granderson will become a member of a pretty exclusive club...(I'm coining it the "420 club") |

A really great nickname for a ballplayer! Read on the net that he was so named for his horse. Whatever. From the looks of it he played like wild fire. |

Actually, Frank Schulte named his favorite horse "Wildfire" after a Broadway show called Wildfire starring Lillian Russell - a well known baseball fan. Eventually Schulte became known as "Wildfire" himself. |

If being a member of this club is noteworthy, one of the heartbreakers is Buck Freeman, who in 1899 came close with 21 solen bases, 25 hrs and 25 triples, but only 19 doubles. |

Another exclusive "club" which I like that includes pre-war players is the more wins than walks club. I only know of three members of this club, although there could certainly be relatively newcomers, I haven' been watching since Saberhagen did it in '94 with 14 wins while yielding only 13 BB. Prior to him was a long stretch to Slim Sallee in 1919, who had 21 wins with 20 walks. And Matty accomplished this as well. But Matty did it for two consecutive seasons: 1913 = 25 wins/ 21 walks, 1914 = 24 wins/ 23 walks. |

Quick Belle story since you brought up the question...I got paired with him in a golf tournament a few years ago(he's been trying to play the mini-tours out here but he's not very good) and everyone in the group is a little intimidated by him because of his demeanor, on the second hole I hit one about 50 yards past him and he comes over to see what driver I'm hitting and I just flexed my bicep and pointed to it like he did when another team(I forget who) had his bat checked after he hit a home run...anyway he cracked up and we had a nice time playing and chatting after that. I think I mentioned the 50/50 thing to him and he said no one will ever do it again. I tend to agree with him on that point. Sorry about the run on sentence! |

Cool story...and the 50-50 thing is incredibly difficult, so he may be right. |

ARod and Luis Gonzalez have both hit 50 doubles and 50 HRs in different seasons. |
