E121 Question

I have a group of E121s. The "series of 80" are all on slightly thicker stock than the "series of 120", but I have a few "80"s that are printed on the thinner stock. Was the set printed on two stocks? or were there sheets or something that could be hand cut?

Does anyone out there have any experience with this? There also appears to be some variation in the size of the cards. Were all the cards issued with the American Caramel back machine cut or hand cut?
