Default We’ve lost a good friend

This is a thread I never want to start. I found out from tBob that Jerry Tate (Gabrinus) has passed away. Jerry was a great guy, it would be hard to not like him. He and tBob, as well as myself, were all living in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Jerry was one of the first guys to see the value of t216s, and had a great collection at one time. He really knew his cards, and was always quick with a compliment when you picked up something special. Jerry quit collecting a while ago, but he still enjoyed seeing what we were getting, and he was willing to talk about different series. I bought many cards from his eBay site until I guess he ran out. He was a special guy, and we are lessened by his passing. I don’t know what happened, Bob said no one had seen him for the a while and the police had to knock in his door and found him. It really leaves me sad, it’s terrible to see him go so young. RIP, Jerry.

This makes me really sad, and I'm not sure what to say.

Jerry was a great guy -- he was always congratulating me on pickups, and he had always been so supportive of my collecting endeavors. I have a lot of really special cards because of Jerry.

An all-around great guy to talk to, a pleasure to deal with, and he was so down to earth about everything.

RIP Jerry.

Very sorry to hear this. Jerry was a great part of the community. He was always so complimentary on pick ups, had great taste in cards (I think he used to own half my collection), and had a good sense of humor. You will be missed Jerry.

This is a punch to the gut this morning. He was one of the first to reach out when I got back in the hobby. As others have said, he would always compliment a great pickup. You could tell that he loved the scarcer issues. He passed way too early; I can’t believe he was so young.

May God comfort those he left behind.

I didn’t know Jerry was so young, we are basically the same age. I am going to plant 3 trees on behalf of the net54 community.

So very sad. Jerry was one of my favorite guys on the forum. Always glad to have others get great cards and he would gladly commend them. Yes, the world is a lesser place without Jerry . RIP my friend and may you find an unknown T216 in Heaven.

OMG! Jerry was an OG T216 guy...a great guy with a passion for these rare cards. I will sorely miss his interactions and insights into the hobby I love. RIP Jerry.

This is a tough one. Jerry was great. Very nice to work with and was very complimentary of everyone's collection. I had some nice deals with him that were always smooth. He will be very missed.

Would be cool to have a Net54 memorial section where all the posts from collectors past could live as way to pay tribute. RIP tBob

"Nice Card - Jerry"

You knew when you got one of these on the pick up thread, you had a quality pick up.

Always a generous and supportive member, Jerry will be sorely missed. Condolences to Ed, TBob, and Jerrys family/friends.

Really sad to see this. Didn’t realize Jerry was so young either. He was a great guy, and I’ll miss the conversations I’ve had over the years with him, and his emails wishing me happy holidays. RIP my friend.

Pete, this made me smile because I was thinking the same thing today -- even if we hadn't emailed in a couple months, I could count on getting a happy Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, whatever. Short and sweet and to the point, but always appreciated and nice to hear from him.

Ryan, thanks for planting the trees on behalf of N54 -- that's a nice thought.

I'm still a little in shock since hearing the news. Jerry was a great friend with extensive knowledge and a rational view of the hobby. With his vast knowledge, it wasn't hard to pick up info from him on the scarcer issues in the hobby. Rest easy my friend, I'll miss our talks.

Sad news. He was an expert, and I learned a lot from him on here. I bought some of his cards years ago and just assumed that he was much older than he was.

My good friend Jerry Tate passed away and it is so sad. Jerry (whose eBay and Net54 name was ‘Gabrinus.’ ) was living a solitary life the past few years and I worried about him. He still had a sharp mind to the end and although he had sold all his cards, he still loved the hobby. They did not do an autopsy so they do not know what caused his death or when it happened. Just so sad.
I remember in the 80’s when everyone else was collecting modern cards or cards from the 50’s and 60’s, Jerry was buying all 1910-1920 caramel cards and Kotton cards. He recognized their value long before the rest of us did.
I miss him.

Man this is so sad. I assumed he was much older. When I started collecting, he had the most min-blowing collection. I remember seeing cards he would auction off on ebay and just being in awe. He was always so supportive and happy for you when you posted something you were excited about. RIP.
