I see that the E107's were issued from 1903 to 1904. Is there a way (other than a player changing teams) to tell exactly which year a certain card was issued? I noticed SGC and PSA always label as "1903 ..." as opposed to "1903-04". Is there more to the story? I've never seen an E107 labeled "1904 ...".
Where can I get a copy of this article: "1903-04 E107 Breisch-Williams: The Historic Set and It's Sponsor" - Old Cardboard, Issue #4 released on 7/15/2005 by Brian McQueen. I did a google search and didn't find it. Thanks, Dan |

No doubt. I purchased that edition specifically to get the E107 article and ended up ordering all of the back issues prior to it and subscribing to the magazine as well. I don't regret it for a minute. O.C. is highly recommended by this enthusiast.

Jeff, with so many unemployed these days even the yearly OC subsc. is something collectors without jobs can't afford.
I have a bunch of old OC issues so if anyone has a certain story they want to read let me know. With my new Iphone app. i can just take a pic and send PDF to someones email in less than 2 minutes!!! |

DanP,
I haven't read the OC article (issue #4) in some time, so it may say otherwise, but keep in mind that the American League was established in 1903. Without checking every single player in the set and matching the teams they played for (which would give an accurate time frame for when this series was issued), and considering the rather archaic printing means of the period, I would venture to say the set likely was issued as a promotion in early 1904 - shortly after the very first World Series. |

Hi Guys (and Gal or two),
I just want to take the opportunity in this thread to provide a little Old Cardboard perspective. First, I want to thank all posters for all of your most favorable comments about the magazine. It is truly gratifying to know that you are enjoying the articles so much. I especially want to thank Jeff Prizner and Brian T. for suggesting that Old Cardboard is must reading for everyone on this forum. While we recognize that we may be a little biased, we fully agree and cannot imagine why anyone in this hobby could not afford or would not see the benefit of ordering a $17.95 (postpaid via first class mail) subscription to the magazine. And quite frankly, we need your support. While we are all for vintage collectors helping other vintage collectors, I'd like to ask you to think for just a moment before you so readily distribute PDFs of our copyrighted articles to those who are not supporting the magazine with a subscription. With print media in general an endangered species, I look at Old Cardboard more as a retirement hobby than a viable business venture. We are now in our seventh year of publication and hope to continue for many years to come. We provide a massive website and monthly eNewsletter at no cost to viewers. If you do NOT count the enormous amount of time that Brett and I put into the effort, we are and will continue to be in the black. As soon and you place any value on our time (or that of our authors), we quickly go into the red. I do it because I enjoy it. For us to continue to pay our increasingly high color printing and magazine distribution costs, we must have your continued support. How you can help: 1) Encourage all of your collecting friends to subscribe without further delay. We offer a substantial discount for our "back pack" of previous issues for those wanting to fill in earlier issues for a complete run. 2) Let our advertisers know that you truly appreciate their support for the magazine and in doing so, the vintage collecting hobby. You may also want to encourage leading companies that do not advertise to do so. 3) For anyone desiring a specific article, please direct them to the Old Cardboard website at www.oldcardboard.com/subscriptions.asp. From that page you can order a subscription, back issues or a full "back pack." You can also link to abstracts for every article we have ever published. Mark T. (Smokey Joe), while I'm sure that you mean well, please realize that an open offer to freely distribute PDFs of previous articles from Old Cardboard is hurting us...and ulltimately hurting the hobby. It also significantly violates copyright law. Thanks for taking a minute to hear our perspective, Lyman |

So it could be argued that for AL Players who have both 1904 Fan Craze and 1903-04 E107's their "RC" (or 1st card) could be either a E107 or a 1904 Fan Craze? There would be no real proof that the E107 was actually produced in 1903 (except for a team change during that period, which I don't believe any AL HOF'ers had). I'll stick with the much less expensive Fan Craze cards for AL HOF'ers unless there's real proof that the E107's were sold in 1903. I guess this topic is similar to the 1916-1920 Big Head discussion going on in another thread. Dan |

Wasn't it proven that all Fan Craze cards (both leagues) were produced in 1906?
edited to add: maybe not proven, but widely believed to be 1906? Last edited by Bicem; 02-15-2010 at 09:08 PM. |

I believe Jeff is correct so it would be a near certainty that the E107's were issued one or more years prior to the Fan Craze cards. That being said, you can pick up high-grade Fan Craze HOF'ers for a fraction of the price of a poor condition E107. I guess it all depends on the preference of the individual collector.

Pains me to be the bearer of bad news but several dozen E107s were at auction just two nights ago including a nice PSA 5 of your great-grandfather. It fetched a bit over $3500.

I don't remember seeing it mentioned but although they're commonly referred to as Breisch-Williams the name was changed to the Williams Caramel Company very early in 1903.
