Default T206 Old Mill Cy Young - What to do?

I have a PSA 1.5 Old Mill Cy Young that has damage to the right corner of the case. It's not really noticeable in a scan but it's apparent in person.

I sent it to PSA for re-encapsulation, but they said due to the damage they would have to review the card again for it's grade and it would be 20+ business days on top of the 3 week hold so I had them send it back unprocessed. They were an absolute nightmare and their quality control is all over the place so I no longer trust them.

My question to the group here is:

Do I get a crossover to a more reputable grading company like SGC? They have been absolutely amazing over all of my submissions from the past year.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Nice card, but I think you should have a third option, one I would choose and that's leave it in the current PSA holder.

Good point. I'll have to see if my OCD will allow that as it's probably best. It really bugs the hell out of me though.

I'd keep it as it is. It looks unlikely to remain in a 1.5 holder with today's standards if you cross it over or have PSA re-grade it.

Probably a 1.

If you will be happy with an SGC 1 Young (Throwing), sell this to one of the PSA fanboys and then buy an SGC 1 for less.

keep it in PSA and keep the grade. IT might be down graded to a 1. and PSA slabs usually get higher resale dollars vs SGC and others.

Am I the only one who thinks PSA is flat wrong in their insistence on "reviewing" the card?

Reholder service is supposed to be just that. It's obvious that a crack in the very top corner of the holder wouldn't cause damage to the card and they should be able to easily tell the card is authentic and the holder is authentic without doing a grade review.

Their website page on reholders literally states that it is most often used for damaged holders.

I would send them a screenshot of their own reholder page to their customer service email and get clarification on why they have wasted so much of your time and money on this.

Maybe nothing comes of your efforts but still seems ridiculous to me.Screenshot_20221220-091341_Chrome.jpg

I wonder if there's a potential for miscommunication here.

My experience when I've had a cracked or broken case is that PSA will check to make sure that the card wasn't damaged by whatever trauma broke the case.

So it could be that while it's a "review", it's not a full review, where they re-grade the card.

I completely agree. I'm not going to waste my time anymore with PSA though, they are an absolute dumpster fire. Their grading is wildly inconsistent in recent years and things like this and other stories I keep hearing make me never want to deal with them again. All the while SGC has been absolutely stellar, with zero flaws in multiple submissions over the last 2 years.

Meanwhile this is what the PSA email regarding the Cy said:

In order to process your submission please reply to the following as we need all resolutions through email:

It has come to our attention your PSA encased card, cert #26118754 - 1909-11 T206 Old Mill Cy Young Clev., Glove Shows was received with a crack on the holder.
Upon re-holdering the card, we will review the card to confirm it meets the current grade 1.5 and it has not been damaged.

If any damage to the card has occurred due to the condition of the holder, the card will receive a new grade based on its current condition.

Please reply acknowledging this statement.

In short, PSA is an absolute mess, don't waste your time, go SGC.

Lastly, I will likely just leave this in the PSA holder for the time being. I really love the card so I don't really care what it grades (the color is so vibrant front and back), but the case has left a sour taste after this experience.

I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time. The review is just to see if there is any new damage to the card because of the holder damage. It has absolutely nothing to do with changing the grade unless the damage to the holder caused damage to the card.

I also believe if they change the grade without damage to the card from the holder they "pay" you the difference between the original grade and the new lower grade.

At least this is how it used to work.

I'm not sure at this point. I have lost all trust in PSA so I am no longer going to give them any business. They are completely incompetent and with much better options out there I have no interest in them either losing my card, not standing behind their grades, damaging my card, or labeling it incorrectly. Their quality control is an absolute mess.

I 100% understand. They can't even label a 1986 Topps Roger Clemens correctly for me. Thats after having to pay them twice and it is still wrong.

Why in the world is PSA not standing behind their prior work? I know, things change, grading evolves, yadda yadda.

It’s all about the money. Sounds very similar to me to a CEO disclaiming the work done by staff, vowing to review and update what has been done...for a price.

JMHO.

Peace out.

I don't know why they don't stand behind prior work. In my opinion, that is where they have done their best work, recently they've been horribly inconsistent.

+1. If they made an error in grading then they should be 100% responsible.
It seems some of the TPG's don't stand behind their grading any longer. Makes one wonder about it. If they don't guarantee their work they must not believe in it.
I would leave the card in question alone. A different holder or grade won't make a difference in value, imo.

I would leave that card alone. With those creases in the card, I have no idea why it got the half point bump that it did. Let some label chaser pay the premium.

If your intention is to sell the card, then you might want to stick with PSA to receive the highest resale value. But you roll the dice on having the grade drop half a point. You know this game, it depends on how the grader feels that day. If you're going to keep it, then why bother with the reholder. If you are a collector that has to have it in a holder and it's not for resale, then send it to SGC, however the grading fee may be higher than the PSA reholder fee and you run the same risk of the grader having a good or bad day.

If it were mine, I'd keep it as is.
