Jay Miller and Joe Gonsowski (renowned Old Judge collectors, and the authors of the Old Judge book), will be on to discuss the complexities, cards, subsets and players of the old judge and surrounding Goodwin and Co sets. Within the podcast, they will also update the top 100 scarcest card list and Hall of fame scarcity list from the book released in 2008. Andy Geller and I are excited for y’all to see this, and hope you guys enjoy . New episodes will be released on the first of every month, with the next interviewee announced at the half way point.

Since there are 523 different subjects in the set, has anyone even approached this number ? What is the highest known collection of different subjects ?

I was also interested in the (McCreachery / Deacon White card) . I thought this would be mentioned in the podcast since White was mentioned as the hardest HOF'er.

Hey Mike! Thanks for watching the podcast. I believe there are major collectors who pursue to get as many of the subjects and cards as possible. hope that helps answer your question!

Is it possible to know that a hypothetical unopened package contains a baseball card as opposed to a card of an actress or pugilist or someone/something else Old Judge included with their cigarettes in 1887-90?
Just in case I get an unopened pack figured I might want to know

Based on dates on the tax stamp you’d be able to tell, if you knew what to look for. Great question

Why isn't the Old Judge N172 broken up into sets for each year, since they are from different years and designs ? 1887 Set, 1888 Set, 1889 Set and 1890 Set ?
We don't group all the Topps, Goudey Sets etc into one set, each year is a separate set. I'm I missing something here.

Hey , I believe they are classified into different sets when they are collected. Each year is pretty distinguishable. They are just not given a different name

One of the reasons is that many of the photos are used in multiple years, as are the card designs. Another might just be that no one is asking for it. T206 cards were produced in different years too, but it's one set.

I'd guess if the cards had numbers on the back and there were multiple cards with the same number, then it would make more sense to separate it

Mike--Great question! The quick answer is because we are saddled with Burdick's mistakes. It isn't even just that he should have subdivided the N172 set. The 1887 short number set contains both N171s and N172s. Calling Old Judges a "set" makes little more sense than calling Topps a set.
