Do you have any provenance for your cabinet?
I hope that you are right, but that does not look like Browning to me. Last edited by robertsmithnocure; 10-25-2022 at 09:01 PM. |

By provenance, do you mean “history of ownership’? If the answer is yes, do you mean the “history of ownership” of the card of the image on the card?

Sorry typo. Do you want the “history of ownership” of the cabinet card or of the image that is on the cabinet card?

By provenance, I mean where did the card come from? Oftentimes, these originate from the families of the players. Cabinet cards like yours were probably not available to the public and were made for personal use.
What makes you think that is Pete Browning? |

Please read the Buck Ewing thread that was created recently. It’s not that long. The facial recognition on the Boston Browning is pretty obvious. I’ll post it if you want or need it. I’m guessing you haven’t done the facial recognition and probably don’t care to. I got 2 other Pete Browning’s. I’ll post them and the facial recognition for the three tomorrow. I haven’t pressed the seller for info on the “history of ownership.” I never needed to know the “history of ownership” on any of my cards yet. Do people buy cards that come with log books nowadays or something? A pile of receipts? What am I missing? Is “history of ownership” word of mouth in the baseball card word. Are auction houses “ownership historians”? Do authenticators use “history of ownership” when looking at an image on a pass or fail basis? How much of a factor in authentication of an image is “history of ownership”? I’d there any authentication companies that look at baseball players faces on a pass or fail basis? Is history of ownership s factor in there analysis?

Browning is one of the scarcest and most desirable 19th century images to find and you have three different? Yes, I would think that you would want to press the seller for the “history of ownership.”

Oh yeah!!
This is TOTALLY the guy selling images of random assholes with moustaches from the 1800's on ebay and claiming they are Baseball Stars and touting some BS facial recognition. I messaged him months back telling him these are not them and asking him to stop and he said something like "thanks for your opinion". |

Regarding the facial recognition claim, I think back in his first ever post on here, a year or so ago, he kept touting another alleged photo identification and saying something about the FBI and facial recognition saying his cabinet/photo was supposedly a match for who he claimed it to be. Also kept claiming to have gotten the advice/backing for such a match by talking to someone he kept referring to as the "king kahuna" I believe, but wouldn't share this supposed expert's name, or valid credentials. Thought that was real interesting, and telling.
He appears to seek out and collect old cabinets and 19th century photos of men that may have at least a passing resemblance to famous historical ballplayers, and is trying to find someone to go along and validate his claims, without any real collaborative evidence or other provenance at all. I believe he even referred to his simply trying to provide for and feed his family with three kids. While I sincerely hope he and his family are well and doing alright, the almost immediate use of such a statement will raise some concern in many as to the reason, and veracity, of playing such a card somewhat early in a hand. While I am no expert and can't definitely say or prove an old photo or cabinet image is or is not one of the people he claims them to be, the chances of his claims that all of the multiple cabinet/photo images he has are of who he claims are likely multiples of times higher than one of us going out and buying next week's winning Mega Millions lottery ticket. People do have doppelgangers, and have also heard/read where facial recognition software is not infallible, and that accuracy of it can be negatively affected by the age of photos, along with many other factors. And with no additional collaborating proof or evidence to support any of the facial recognition claims, his claims will likely continue falling on mostly deaf ears.
