Last week my little 8 year-old daughter gave me this baggie of beat up 1980s-2000s cards as a gift. She saved up her good behavior points at school and excitedly traded them in when given the chance. As I looked through them she anxiously asked “are these special cards daddy? do you like them?” I know this isn’t a T206 Cobb but to me these are far more valuable. I am so richly blessed and will never part with them! Thanks for reading my proud dad moment.

Your post wins the day. Couldn't agree more about the value of these cards. When my son was 7 years old he collected 2005 Topps Opening Day cards. He put his doubles in sheets and a small binder and gave it to me with a sheet on the front of the binder that said "Dad's special valuable cards". I wouldn't trade those for anything! BTW, my son is now 24. The time flies by so enjoy these times and moments. Thanks for sharing.

It does not get any better than that. I guess I would put them in individual card holders and create my own labels much like the 'graders' do, but include her name ' from the ++++ collection'. Don't I see a 1968 common on the bottom? One of the few card sets I can easily identify as I remember buying them in 1968.

Great post and wonderful story. Reminds me of me taking my grandson to a Asheville Tourists game lot's of years ago. We visited the shop and he saw a card he wanted so I bought it for him. As I was taking him home he asked me to "hold" it for him so it wouldn't get lost. I held it, still have it. He became a Red Sox guy (like his father) so I started a Red Sox album for him. It will be here along with that card I "held" for him for him to have when I am gone.

Great story, OP. Your daughter rocks! Reminds me of when my little guy used to sit next to me with his binder so he could "play baseball cards with Daddy."

Nice story! She's a keeper.
You can't put a price on meaning. For me, a card I value in my mostly 1950's and earlier collection is a lone beater 1982 Topps Bill Lee. When I first began collecting as a kid I gave my dad a stack of 1982 topps to review for stars and it was his top pick. He loved the Spaceman. I have always, held it in high regard as it was my first best card, and makes me think of my dad. |

Thanks for sharing and it brought back memories for me too. I am lucky to have a couple of generous daughters who would always share like that. Awesome.
Keep it fresh and she will remember that. Pull out the cards every so often and just look at them with her around. My girls are turning 27 and 25 this week and we still share so many sports memories. Enjoy every sandwich with her (and everything else).

Those cards will forever be in your collection and I'm sure they will be categorized as "special". Reminds me of a Xmas gift I received from my sons in 2012... 1960 Roberto Clemente PSA 6. Still my favorite card!

It's always fun to hear your kids excited about cards. I was ripping 89 Bowman packs with my 3 and 5 year old a couple months back and the oldest kept saying "Is this a good one?" 99% of answers were nope. She hit the Griffey Jr and was so excited.

People should often enjoy cards as cards, and skip that 'investment potential' BS for a while.
I thought if I got back into collecting it would be of items that have minimal value. |

Awesome!!!
Those cards have instantly become the most prized cards in your collection! I also have a small grouping of items that I have been gifted from my kids that will be with me to the end. When my wife and I were dating she secretly paid for an item I had "won" on eBay (through sniping) without me having even known I had won it as she buried her tracks and I will NEVER sell the P2 Hugh Jennings pin she bought for me when we had almost no money. Family is awesome!

One of my kids did something similar for me a few years ago. Their elementary school had a holiday gift store, and they bought me a new (at the time) Jeter card that was mounted on a plaque. When she gave it to me, her older brother immediately pointed out that it was a Yankee not a Phillies card (my team), but I told her that wasn't a problem and that it was a great present she had picked out for me.
