Mile High has a complete set T206 set available for bid either as a complete set or via individual cards. My question is which bidding form usually wins out in these situations?

They do this quite often. The individual prices almost always wins.

Yeah that’s what I was afraid of. Would like to take a run at the set but figure it might be a waste of time

yeah takes a lot of time hitting click........ i think everyone in the hobby 'wastes' time on a lot of other things and waste a lot more time than clicking a few bids that dont win.

Someone would really have to place a premium on not having to spend the time putting a set together to pay more for a set than people are willing to pay for each card individually. I think I remember seeing this happen once with an 86 fleer basketball set. I could be wrong though.

They did the same thing in their last auction and the set won.

Interesting...didn’t realize they had sold a T206 set so recently.

What I meant was doing the research to determine a proper bid for a set of 500+ cards if I don’t have a realistic chance of winning it.

It will be interesting to see which wins this time. The set won last time by a wide margin but I'm not so sure this time. Memory Lane had a near set sell last night so it's possible the individual cards win this time since the two are so close together. The past few sets (or near sets) have sold for pretty strong prices.

I looked very closely at the Memory Lane set. Any impressions about the price it sold at?

I don't follow T206 that closely...but seems like the final price was STRONG and T206 seems more popular than ever at the moment.
People are still paying stupid money for "condition rarity opinions." |

I think it sold for full retail value, or very close to it. The Mile High set in the fall of last year did the same if not more than value but the near set Memory Lane did in August didn't come close. It's been interesting to watch how they go!

The most recent Memory Lane set had some rarer front/back combos which was cool. But yeah it did go pretty strong and much stronger than the previous one offered there

still i assume you arent starting from scratch in your research...i think we all have wasted more time in the hobby versus whatever limited time you need to complete the research....heck i watched youtube for an hour today about baseball cards which will get me ZERO dollars....lots of ways to use time and make nothing...putting together a bid doesnt seem like a waste of time even if dont win.. |

$113,000 seems very strong for the latest Memory Lane set. I know there was an American Beauty Cobb Bat Off Authentic included but the Green Cobb and Red Cobb were both 2's and the Bat On was 3.5. There were some better cards included but 25 were also missing and it was the 17th ranked set.

Interested in seeing how this pans out as well. I’m bidding on two cards from this auction for my collection. I plan to cross them over the SGC however if I do win.

Last time the set won. Not sure if people stopped bidding on individual cards so as to not waste time or what. Still surprised that happened and wonder if it'll happen this time.

Yes the set is up well into 130,000. Looks like I’ll be missing out on my individual cards I bid on. Set bidding is very very strong.

175,100.28 for the entire set. I’d think most individuals would enjoy the history and building the set.

The individual cards added together were far less than the full set price. Many of the individual cards were going cheap. Looks like people gave up bidding on the separate cards. I tried but it was really tedious trying to bid up all those commons!

Well, you're also talking about the difference between the "collector crowd" and the "investor crowd"; the collector would likely be bidding on the individuals because they already have hundreds of these and would only need to fill their holes. While the Investor class would be buying the whole group to hold and resell at a later date.

I don't think this is having the intended effect. I think buyers of individual cards are turned off by the possibility of wasting their time. It's good marketing to attract a consignor, but I think an honest to goodness set break is still the path to better money.

Historically collectors have bought sets and lots to upgrade their own holdings. Today it might just be all about the break and the profit. Since abandoning the T205 set I am back to types and cards I like. (preferably with some borders left on the card)

I was looking at the Memory Lane set for that exact reason. Upgrade my set and sell off the rest. I was the underbidder on it and still kicking myself a bit for not going higher although you never know what the final hammer price would have been.

Since I am a retired postal worker, this is really embarrassing. I received my Mile High catalog today. Yes, the one for the auction that ended on January 23rd. I contacted MH and asked them to complain to their local Postmaster.
It is a beautiful catalog, with some great items. I didn't see any Louisiana items, so I wouldn't have bid anyway, but the USPS really did a poor job on this one. I wonder how many other catalogs were delayed? Rick
