Default Place your bets! 52 Topps Mantle playing days signed!

Place your bets! Anyone see this 52 Topps Mantle playing days signed card at the National? HA is auctioning it this fall. Should be an epic showdown for this mind blowing national treasure.

If the Jordan/Kobe signed 1 of 1 Logoman goes for $7-8MM, how will this vintage signed Mantle compare?

I'm bad at this game, but I'll say $1.2M.

A PSA/DNA 3/10 with a newer signature went for $422K in 2023, then the same card went for almost $800K in 2024.

This one's not as pretty, but the people who will bid on this have obscene amounts of money to throw around and would probably pay a premium for the old signature.

On the other hand, a 1951 Bowman Mantle with the old signature went for just $54K earlier this year. I'd probably rather have that and a vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee over the 1952 Topps.

On a good day, $750,000. On a bad day, maybe $500,00.

I say 1M. Only 2 of the 21 are from his playing days, the other 19 are post retirement.

These crazy numbers for cardboard are instruments of class war designed to guarantee the domination of the working class.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this collection at auction. There were probably 20 more vintage signed cards from this era on display at their National booth.

Same here. I’m hoping there will be some 1953 Topps I need. I’ll probably get blown out of the water, but at least I’d know they’re out there.

Would not be at all surprising if Geoff Wilson goes for this mantle.

I realize I might be in the vast minority here, but I have never liked signed cards that also have a facsimile signature. Something about the redundancy makes the card look cluttered to my eye.

You're not alone. The 1955 and 1956 Topps autos are the worst for that, because the signatures are often in roughly the same place. The redundancy still triggers my OCD with 1952 Topps, but it's a little better because the facsimile is confined to a box.

I never thought or looked at it that way, but see what you mean.

What’s amazing about this Mantle early playing days signature is that it’s remarkably similar to his facsimile signature in the box, which actually is the signature Topps used from the player’s contracts for these cards. It actually memorializes Mantle’s signature to his playing days.

It won't sell below $700,000. My guess is $840k

That’s an interesting factoid. So if they used signatures from the contracts, why is the “e” in Mantle’s Type 1 52T signature different from the one in these Type 2s? I understand the other design differences, but not the signature.

Good question, not sure why. However, here’s the article about it:
