I asked this in another forum and received some very good answers so I figured I'd ask here:
If you had $2500-3500 to spend on 1-3 cards what would you buy for PC and/or what would you buy as an investment. So essentially two part question: $2500-3500 for PC And $2500-3500 for investment And why? |

If you'd asked me a year ago, I'd say a 1952 Topps Mantle for investment and PC, but that has probably come and gone. I think we are seeing an uptick in the market right now, so it's hard to see anything as being a good investment right now. If I was buying for my PC, I'd probably pick up a couple of regional or Venezuelan Mantles, given that they are awesome cards and a bit under appreciated in my opinion.

Since I strictly collect post war, I'd say you can't go wrong with either Mantle's or Aaron's. Preferably Aaron's RC and what ever money left over to purchase the oldest, highest grade Mick you can find.
Clemente is another option instead of Hank, and actually maybe a better choice, but that is subjective. Willie Mays also comes to mind as his cards seem to be hot lately as well. Good luck. ![]()

I think that for the time being, the investment ship has entered pure speculation. As for my personal collection, I'm torn between grabbing a signed 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle before the 53T goes batshit insane like the 52T, or going after some of the tougher signers in the set. Probably the latter.

Rookie Jackie Robinson
but i like to get a card in a condition better than you dont see on Ebay bin week after week. Like for ty cobbs t206s you see psa 3s..but rarely psa 4s or for rookie aarons' you see psa 6s but rarely 7s for bins....you have to wait around for those higher grades...pwcc a good source when they have their auctions or they do sometimes appear on ebay and of course other auction houses but that tells you what the sought after grade is, the ones that arent easy to find on any given day on ebay |

I agree with Jeff. A nice centered Aaron, probably a PSA 5 or SGC 6 could be found in your price range and still has upside potential in my opinion. A 51 Mays or 48 Robinson in PSA 4-5 would also be good choices, as would a 56 Mantle PSA 7 or a 52 Bowman Mantle PSA 6.

Investment - I would buy any Topps pre 1970 set in high grade for a set break, always a lot of money to be made there off folks willing to sell a set complete.
PC - Same thing because if I bought a complete set I would keep it instead of selling it... ![]()

I wonder if people are going to be dropping tons of cash on cards next week. Blue collar collector guys like myself are priced out of the market for nicley centered graded 6+ HOF rookie cards. For a 3,500 card I'd be putting money down to pay it off over prob 8-12 months. I'd still go with the best 53 Topps Mays I could find for the 3,5000. IMO this is strictly a investors/short term flip market, holding for less then a year, then selling. I was wondering if any of you guys are nervous about paying up for a card during this time? I know I'm very skeptical about it. Any thoughts ?

I do not buy as an investor and I limit myself to cards that I can afford without using a CC. Every now and then I will, only to ensure safety during delivery, and only if I can sell certain cards to recoup my cost quickly. I think "co-mingling" subjectively big card purchases with family $$ is generally not a good idea. And the 53T Mays is a solid choice!

I totally agree with you. Many cards I believe are pretty safe and can be sold for what you have into them or more. When I mentioned paying off a card over a 8-12 month period I was meaning paying off to a personal seller/dealer. I'm with you, no way I'd put that on a credit card. I'd feel to bad lol .
Thanks I feel the 53 Mays is undervalued and very difficult to find centered in ex+condition. |

Always felt that 10% minus what you paid is the rule on good cards. Cant assume you will get back your money when you were willing to pay more than anyone else at an auction in which the auction got part of the money too.
Never assume you will get what you paid for a card, but losing more than 10% sucks.. |
