When I was reading the Freedom Card Board message board today (yes I know that sounds really awkward). The owner of the board, Chris Gilmore (Hi Chris!) mentioned he thought the board needed more moderation as topics were drifting off-course and not staying on point.
As we have seen with Robert's point about Pete Nash, if the thread stays on point, we end up with a seven post thread. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=174896 Here we end up with an 100 post thread and an fascinating (to me) discussion about music I'm not tuned into (1990-on rap, hip-hop, etc) and some talk about sports memorabilia. I think, and please take this for all it is not worth, is that there is really is not any defense on Pete's part he can post towards Robert's accusations since that would get him in even more trouble. The other issue, is there is some very serious legal issues which Leon brought up on our autograph side (may have been memorabilia) in which the actual judgements are posted about Peter. Since those are public documents, Leon is well within his rights to post about them. and that did spark a nice long thread. So, if we don't go off in another direction, we get a 10 post thread which is meaty but boring and if we do go off in another direction, we hear about that from the mods. To some extent the FCB is having some of the same issues and here is an excellent thread on some of their same "related" issues. I know this is a long read and most of these will not be familiar to you all, but the gist of the thread is very similar to what occured on the Pete Nash/Sunny, er. Rap/Hip-Hop music discussion thread. Thus, for your enjoyment http://www.freedomcardboard.com/foru...oderation.html And, would you also be in favor of even tighter moderation on this ship. I know some people would and others would not. Regards Rich |

Rich,
The point that was being made to you (unless I'm wrong) wasn’t about on topic or off topic. It was more that in the case of Robert’s thread the mods didn’t want Robert’s message to be lost in a sea of music and hip hop flash backs. Robert was nice enough to give a little insight into his past dealings with Mr. Nash and I think we all should take note as there is some pretty serious stuff in those posts. For me in situations and threads like that I’d take a 10 post on topic thread that seems boring all day long over a 100 post thread about what hip hop bands and music you dig. Rich I will say I wrestle with how anyone can find a thread where a fellow collector shares that he has been ripped off. Physically threatened and left out to dry by one of the hobby’s more known figures a boring read. Especially on a baseball card forum. It’s also not about Nash responding most of us know he would not dare chime in he will hide behind his website and throw stones. No way he's stepping up and addressing his issues with Robert or anyone else. It’s more so that folks know who he is and if Robert is incorrect well then Prime Minster the floor and mic are yours please drop some knowledge on us. As for other boards and how they are run in terms of moderation of lack of who cares. This place runs like this and others run differently. Leon does a good job. Does he do some things sometime I disagree with, sure but his place his rules. At the end of the day this isn’t a place I have to live full time, these people aren’t my roommates and I don’t have to raise kids here, it’s a chat board. Cheers, John |

If you had a baseball card dust-up with Stephen Perkins and made a thread on here called "Who is Stephen Perkins?", I think you would get a thread about Jane's addiction and Nine Inch Nails, and barely a word about the cards.
I'm just glad they have a separate board for Fred McGriff cards. |

The moderation here is less than any other board I have been involved with. There is very little if any deletion of posts, and threads often run away into wildly divergent tangents. In the thread which you referenced, a moderator attempted to keep the discussion on track due to his view on it's importance. This is the first instance of 'moderator interference' that I can recall.... I understand that you were slapped for questioning authority, but it sometimes has to be done. ![]()

They only say 'stay on topic' when it is someone they like posting about someone they hate.
other way around and talk about laser beams, making rope out of hemp and whatever else you like for 14 pages.. on the autograph side i have a thread about heritage auctions and boxing autographs and the last several pages have been about my wife who has nothing to do with it, and gasp, no leon or dan bretta telling us to stick to the original topic of the thread which is heritage, they let it run wild because its roste being targeted. i wonder why that is? They only crack the whip when they want to - and it depends on whose ox is being gored. my opinion. Last edited by travrosty; 08-31-2013 at 04:36 PM. |

This board appears to be moderated much like the CGC comics message boards. People are given pretty much free reign to discuss topics and sometimes threads do go OT. Sometimes there are 2-3-4 different discussions going on.
The board members are good about getting OT things reigned in and if need be the mods get involved. I prefer this board to the PSA board as you can get deep into a topic without it getting shit down. There is actual discussion here, on and off topic, which creates a sense of community I have found lacking in other places. |

I would be in favor of tighter moderation. I believe posts should stay on topic and that it is disrespectful to the OP when they stray. This view should not be construed to mean that off-topic posts cannot be insightful. Rather the poster should initiate his/her own thread to make them.

serious threads should stay on topic, as others can move with the flow of conversation. If you want to bring up a random issue way off topic just start another thread. just my opinion.
