Picked up a piece recently with the following players pictured. I think I know who the Sox player and possibly the Cubs player is but anyone recognize these players? (especially the Federal League player), the item is from either 1914 or 1915 so that should help to date? Any help is appreciated...

Can't help on id's but the insignia of the Federal Leaguer, on his uniform, I don't recall seeing before. I assume it is FL for Federal League. Good luck with the id's. Hopefully one of our members will be able to help out.

Chicago seems most likely for the Federal League team, but as Leon said, is not a uniform style I am familiar with. It's closest to the 1914 Chi-Feds styles, but not quite a match:

To me, the guy with the 'FL' shirt looks like Joe Tinker.

If someone thinks the first player looks like Al Wickland here's his photo.

It would probably be fairly easy to find a 1913 roster in the images for the Chicago papers - might even be able to find the paper with those exact photos, along with the i.d.'s

I like Bill Moriarty from the 1913 Federal League team from Chicago, basically because of the eyebrows (?) and nose for the FL player

1913 Roster
http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...gi?id=0724d373 1914 Roster http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHI/1914.shtml My Federal League knowledge is sketchy at best. Looks like they were considered an independent/minor league in 1913 and the Chicago team went by the nickname Chicago Keeleys? Then in 1914 stepped up to major league status and changed the name to Chicago Chi-Feds, then to the Chicago Whales in 1915. All this is coming from baseball-reference.com, as do the above rosters. Dto7's Al Wickland is listed on the 1914 roster, but not 1913, but is clearly wearing the same style of uniform shown in Rhett's photo. I'm just all kinds of confused now. Could one or both photos be from spring 1914, still wearing the uni's from 1913? Rhett, are the photos you have actually clipped from the publication, or is that just how you cropped them for posting? Just wondering if there might be some other details (from the backs even) that might help to at least tie down a year on these. |

The Wickland photo is spring 1914 - they wore the 1913 uniforms at that point. Rhett's photo could be either year.
The White Sox player is Walsh. |

I wanted to see if I could confirm the identities prior to posting the whole piece but I'll go ahead and show it. I think the item is from 1914 and is a broadside (or possibly a trolley sign) from the Chicago Examiner advertising their coverage of the 3 Major Leagues of the time. It is doubtful they would be covering the 1913 Federal League season to this extent, especially assigning one of their writers (and former Major Leaguer) to cover an outlaw minor league team. Anyways, here is the whole piece, it measures approx 11" by 21" in size. Neat piece...

Awesome piece!
I know that you said it's a trolley sign, but what are the dimensions for scale? Congrats! |

I don't know if is a broadside advertising piece or perhaps a trolley sign. The dimensions are 11" x 21" (roughly).

Rhett - that is beautiful!
Tinker was signed in December of 1913, so I'm still going with him as the guy in the FL photo. Mark - how about those ears? ![]()

All players from Chicago in this era were ambidextrous. They just picked up whatever glove was available.

There are a bunch of spring 1914 Chi FL photos on the Chicago Daily News site (including the one of Wickland, below left). For 9 of them we can see the belt clearly. Only the left-handed Wickland has a style matching the belt worn by the player depicted in Rhett's item. I think it is very likely Wickland. The facial features seem consistent, but given the angle and the relatively few examples I have, I can't say absolutely for sure. If anyone wants to order a hi-res of the Wickland photo from Chicago History Museum, I probably could give a better answer.
