Greetings everyone. I was wondering what the consesus is for Willie Mays's scarcest Topps card? My vote is for his 1952 Topps. This is just for regular Topps issue and not regional issues. Look forward to some replies.

Since he said "scarcest" I will have to agree with the 1952. There are more collectors that want that card than his 1953, and by enough to make it scarcer, imo. Now, had he said..."what is the rarest" then I might go with the 1953.

Is there an official hobby definition of the descriptors, "scarce" versus "rare?" Don't know that I've ever actually seen one. The concept of a card viewed as "scarce" when it is more desireable than another, even though there are more examples in existence, while a card is considered "rare" simply because fewer collectors want it, despite it being more plentiful than another, seems like an arbitrary distinction when the two adjectives actually have the same meaning.
