My scanner is ghetto.
I was told to look for ones that have a CCD element? Anyone familiar with Epson perfection v33/330? Amazed at weak selection at Staples, Best Buy, and Office Max. Thanks. |

CCD elements will give you the best image.
The Canon CanoScan series is a great line of scanners. If you do a forum search we had a couple scanner threads not too long ago too. |

Yeah been seeking the canoscan but nowhere to be found. This Epson v370 seems to have CCD so will give it a whirl.

Have a sample scan of a card in a holder taken with your Epson? I need to upgrade so I'm curious.
Thanks. Rob |

I have an Epson Perfection V33. I think it does a great job for a scanner that costs well under $100.
Here is a scan taken with it: ![]() Best Regards, Eric

I have a Canon CanoScan 5600f, purchased on Amazon (check there first for prices and reviews, even if you're not buying there).
I saw a scan some time ago and had to PM the collector about the scanner. Should I ever buy a new one, this is what I'm getting.... Epson v500 Photo scanner. http://www.amazon.com/Epson-B11B1890...+Photo+scanner Scan 'em if ya got 'em! Last edited by CW; 06-03-2013 at 06:42 PM. |

I know you're looking at an Epson, but I can't say enough about mt Canoscan 9000F. I am in the middle of rescanning my graded card collection. It's awesome!

Was too impatient to get some scans done and grabbed the Epson in stock. It's a huge upgrade from what I was working with, though I am uncertain what, if anything, needs to be done with all the various picture options.
Just did a run-through of my collection and kept the scanner settings at default; it's nice to have in-focus shots, that's for sure. |

Matt, if you don't mind looking at threads on another forum, here's one I started on sportscardforum.com shortly after getting my scanner . There are several examples of different card types/surfaces...modern, vintage, in one touch cases, graded card slabs, top loaders, etc.
http://www.sportscardforum.com/threa...-ve-ever-spent!! I use a Canon Canoscan 8400F. Cost me $60 on Ebay. It has a CCD scanning element (important when scanning things with depth, like cards in slabs), and a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp. Now, almost 10 months later, it's still going strong. Here's my Certified autograph prospect collection, probably about 200 cards in total by now. Every single scan has come out incredible looking: http://www.sportscardforum.com/threa...uto-collection I do very little adjusting in Photoshop, usually I'll just tweak some of the levels. But the scans right out of the starting gate are near perfect. And I have to say that Canon's technical support has been about the best I've ever experienced. I bought the scanner used, but they didn't hesitate to help me. I emailed their tech support five or six times, and without fail, they got back to me within 2-3 hours with detailed instructions on what I was doing wrong. They earned me as a customer for life. Good luck!

With the lid up, you're going to get more ambient light, and it helps with the scan quality of certain kinds of cards, especially in my experience, with graded cards. Obviously it won't matter as much with SGC graded cards, as they have a black background, but with PSA or Beckett graded cards, it makes the area around the card black, and the case condition (ie any potential frosting from attempted case-cracks) pops out more.

I use Google's free image software Picassa for managing my scans. Not only does it provide a great web-hoster for sharing scans here and elsewhere, but it allows me to adjust the exposure to get the card to look just right.
I took Fred's Paige scan above and then ran it through Picassa, as follows: ![]() ![]()
