Striking out again at Goodwin

Like most other advanced collectors, auctions have generally been the best source of acquisitions for us.

We have tracked our auction batting average (exclusive of e bay) on cards that sold for $1000 or more over the past 5 years. Whilst our overall average was just about .350 our batting average with Goodwin..080 (2 for 25) over the past 3 years.

In last night's auction we bid aggressively on three ultra high e type card lots and finally went to sleep after 2:30 PM. Clearly we were competing against someone who was determined to win at any price.

We were wondering which auction houses have proved most productive for you and which ones are the most difficult to win.

Bruce- The cards you go after are also being pursued by the set registry crowd, and you know the perils of going against them. If you bid on medium grade cards, say in the range of Excellent condition, you would probably find prices quite reasonable.

I imagine you were going after the Konetchy and Dooin... very nice cards. That's the thing about going against the set registry folks - whether you win is totally dependant upon whether those people show, because they will pay almost anything (then again, that can make the cards a very good investment).

I was impressed with the prices for the two T211 Red Sun cards. $910.63 and $1,002.28 seemed to be very strong. Is this series especially popular now?

Don't typically bid in Goodwin's auctions but I find REA's auctions to be particularly difficult over the years. I almost always win SOMETHING but on the really nice BB stuff when I was bidding on it, REA proved more difficult than Mastro or Hunt or Lelands. Rob runs a top notch auction and gets tons of bids. Don't think anything untoward, just difficult to top some bidders on some lots.

I think most of the bidding actually happened in the fifteen hours after 2:30 p.m., but it's nice to be holding top bids on the afternoon of the auction.

From my neck of the woods, I was surprised at the prices on the three Allegheny's. I picked up two of them, for less combined than I paid for the other one in my collection.

The 52 Topps Mantle SGC 84 sold for exactly what it sold for in February. I guess that means the consignor took a big hit given the buyer's premium, ouch.

A PSA 8 N28 Comisky realizes $31K while a PSA 8 N28 Anson realizes $10K. Are you kidding?! Is this simply registry madness? Oh, and N28 Kelly, Clarkson, Keefe and Ward, all PSA 8's too, each go for about $5K.

Nice pick-up, Jay. I was surprised to see that card not receive any bids for the final week plus extended bidding time during the auction. I think you got a pretty good deal on it.

Corey-Didn't the whole N28 set in approx PSA8 go for under $25K in the live Mastro auction last year?

Sorry--It was SGC graded and went for $30K. The grades on the baseball players went to SGC86.

I had the same thought regarding the N28 Comiskey. According to the population report, it is tied for the highest graded.

It must be a registry thing.

Barry is absolutely right on the money. The mid-grade cards and authentic cards were extremely reasonable. The very nice E90-1 Peaches Graham I won in an authentic holder went for far less than they sell for on ebay.

I had a great night with Goodwin - the only card I lost was the n172 Hellman. Congrats to whomever picked that one up. Here are my other pickups from last night (went to bed at 2:30 and woke up happy).

I was pretty satisfied with the overall value. I feel like I paid fair market on each of these (and actually below on a couple as well).

The Tinker includes the Evers and Chance combo...couldn't post b/c of 5 pic limit.

Just a general comment--Bill Goodwin is a true gentleman who runs a great auction. In these times with questions surrounding some other auction houses it is great for the hobby to have people like Bill.

Well if you want to know what I think happened with the n28's, over the winter everyone was rushing into high grade prewar due to the economic panic. N28 psa 8's and t206 9's were going for record prices. When the recovery took hold, those bidders dropped out. Just my two cents. The Comisky was a set registry battle for sure.
