The distinguished publisher of special interest books,
Jefferson, North Carolina based McFarland and Company,
has just released a new book entitled

"Greatness in Waiting"- An Illustrated History of
the early New York Yankees 1903-1919

The book is packed with wonderful early photos
including several ultra rare baseball cabinet and
card photos, most notably a T 200 Premium
of the NY American League team and a
rare Horner Cabinet of the 1903 NY Highlanders.

The book's author is the distinguished SABR
member Ray Istorico

Interesting title for this book! Not sure that some of those early Highlander teams could have ever been considered even potentiall great! But the Yanks did turn it around in a hurry.

Jeff- The reason the Yanks turned it around so quickly was they raped the Boston Red Sox of so many of their stars. The Bosox never recovered for many, many years....

They just had a better front office.

In early 1925, the Yankees offered to trade Gehrig to the Boston Red Sox for first baseman Phil Todt to repay Boston for the blockbuster Babe Ruth trade a few years earlier. The Red Sox turned the Yankees down.

I actually bought this book on Bruce's suggestion and am in the middle of it. It's really a treasure trove of deadball era info and a fun read. Very well-researched with great pics. I've learned a lot thus far. Definitely a book to read and have in your collection.

Thanks for your kind comments.

I hope everyone will enjoy reading the book as much as I enjoyed
doing the research/compiling photos (and hopefully creating something that appeals to deadball era fans/collectors as well as the general public). While my subject was the Yankees it's not necessarily written from a fan's point of view - the sport (or business) of baseball back then being different in many ways than that of today.

Got my copy from Amazon today. Gave it a good once over and liked what I saw. It'll be a great bedside book: short chapters, loads of great pictures, and a great array of anecdotes of the deadball Yanks.
