I love new (old) cards in the hobby!!!
CGC Cards Grades First-of-its-kind 1953 Jackie Robinson Magazine Baseball Card Pretty cool find. Graded from CGC, our valued advertiser. https://www.cgccards.com/news/article/12170/ And being auctioned by another Net54baseball supporter (thanks), Hake's Auctions. https://www.hakes.com/Auction/ItemDe...-KNOWN-EXAMPLE Good luck to all bidding, the AH and the consignor. .

The fact that someone typed their name on the back can probably account for the visible bends on the front of the card. What do you think PSA would grade this card with the type on the reverse.

Edit: Actually, after reading this "The card was part of the subscription, with each subscriber receiving their own example, which included their name printed on the back," I don't think PSA would give it a MK since the card was released by the manufacturer this way. Similar to the tobacco factory stamps on T51 Murad College Series, which they don't downgrade for.

History via July 1953 issue -
![]() Honestly a bit strange to me as a "new" issue as while this magazine was very short lived, 5 months or so, it was advertised as Jackie Robinson as the editor. and a costly collectable per any previous sales for Jackie fans. This advert was well known for many years, Perhaps, the short lived run did cause few of these cards to be mailed?

I think it's safe to assume that PSA probably refused to grade it, hence it has landed itself into a CSG slab (the best slabs).

PSA was not approached. Hake's went with CGC as their first choice.

I guess we will never know for sure until we find another, whether the name typed on the back of the card was done by the person that got the card, or by the magazine. It doesn't look very professionally done, which is why I thought it was done by the person that received it. I figured he rolled it into a typewriter (putting the creases in the card), and then typed his name in the space provided. Another observation, I noted that the magazine advertisement says his autograph appears on the back, when it actually appears on the front and the back of the card.

Did anyone notice this is also a soft launch of CGC's larger holder?

At least it's a card. I'll never forget PSA grading a newspaper clipping of Nolan Ryan that one time.

Making point that this price would have been a fraction of what this would have pulled 2 years ago. Market ain't what it used to be. Last edited by Snapolit1; 11-17-2023 at 12:33 PM. |

Not a market issue. Newly discovered items are a pricing crapshoot. The spectrum of obscurity and rarity. Few people commit mega bux to a novelty. If a few more come to market I think this sale will look good.
