CGC Cards Grades First-of-its-kind 1953 Jackie Robinson Magazine Card- Now At Hakes

I love new (old) cards in the hobby!!!

CGC Cards Grades First-of-its-kind 1953 Jackie Robinson Magazine Baseball Card

Pretty cool find. Graded from CGC, our valued advertiser.

https://www.cgccards.com/news/article/12170/

And being auctioned by another Net54baseball supporter (thanks), Hake's Auctions.

https://www.hakes.com/Auction/ItemDe...-KNOWN-EXAMPLE

Good luck to all bidding, the AH and the consignor.

The fact that someone typed their name on the back can probably account for the visible bends on the front of the card. What do you think PSA would grade this card with the type on the reverse.

Wow. Very cool to see something like that survive and be appreciated again.

parkplace33 10-25-2023 02:28 PM

Very interested to see what this sells for.

Would be surprised if it doesn't double it's high estimate.

Maybe a 4(MK) if the typing created indents, 2(MK) if it caused creases.

Edit: Actually, after reading this "The card was part of the subscription, with each subscriber receiving their own example, which included their name printed on the back," I don't think PSA would give it a MK since the card was released by the manufacturer this way. Similar to the tobacco factory stamps on T51 Murad College Series, which they don't downgrade for.

Real cool item.

History via July 1953 issue -

Honestly a bit strange to me as a "new" issue as while this magazine was very short lived, 5 months or so, it was advertised as Jackie Robinson as the editor. and a costly collectable per any previous sales for Jackie fans. This advert was well known for many years, Perhaps, the short lived run did cause few of these cards to be mailed?

I think it's safe to assume that PSA probably refused to grade it, hence it has landed itself into a CSG slab (the best slabs).

Hake's Auctions 10-26-2023 10:43 AM

PSA was not approached. Hake's went with CGC as their first choice.

I guess we will never know for sure until we find another, whether the name typed on the back of the card was done by the person that got the card, or by the magazine. It doesn't look very professionally done, which is why I thought it was done by the person that received it. I figured he rolled it into a typewriter (putting the creases in the card), and then typed his name in the space provided. Another observation, I noted that the magazine advertisement says his autograph appears on the back, when it actually appears on the front and the back of the card.

Did anyone notice this is also a soft launch of CGC's larger holder?

Yes, and it is what I am anxiously waiting for. I heard from an anonymous source that they are hoping for an end of year, first of year, launch. I think you will see a bit more activitiy around here, concerning CGC, once those holders are available. I have quite a few larger sized cards I need to send in.

At least it's a card. I'll never forget PSA grading a newspaper clipping of Nolan Ryan that one time.

Personally, I have no issue grading a magazine clipping, as long as it says that on the holder. If someone wants to grade them, who cares? Weirder things have been graded. Heck, most of the TPG's still have their heads up their ass on what a handcut card is. None of these are handcut. And the pack they came in....(as shown before)

You and me both, brother. I think their holders are the best in the business in terms of balancing security and aesthetics, and since so much of what I am into is postcard size (Exhibits), I am holding stuff too. I like SGC, but you can open their holders with a popcorn fart.

Sold for $14K. I was close but bowed out.

In March of 2021 this card sells for $80,000.

The times they are a changing.

What AH did it sell for $80,000, I guess that buyer took a bath.

Schlesinj 11-17-2023 09:03 AM

I think he is say he believes it would have sold for $80k in 2021.

If it had been sold in 2021. . . .

Making point that this price would have been a fraction of what this would have pulled 2 years ago. Market ain't what it used to be.

Exhibitman 11-18-2023 07:16 AM

Not a market issue. Newly discovered items are a pricing crapshoot. The spectrum of obscurity and rarity. Few people commit mega bux to a novelty. If a few more come to market I think this sale will look good.

+1 Rarity doesn't equal value. Demand equals value.
