Heritage Auction pickups from last night....

Boy there were some nice T206s, it looks like I won the SGC 84 Johnny Evers (Blue). I was very surprised to find that out waking up this morning, as I thought it went extremely cheap....The other ones I had bids on, not so lucky!

I was underbidder on a few things. My collecting focus is so narrow there was nothing I really needed for my collection. The things I was watching, for resale, went higher than resale prices I could pay.

nothing for me...seems like some pretty fair prices on rare 19th c cabinets...d304 cobb...e98 set. e99/100 near sets.

Still blows me away some BSF prices considering so many are out there!!!!

I thought there were some great buys to be had last night. I won the two lots I was most interested in, and ended up springing for a 3rd because I thought the price was right.

I reeled in the D304 Cobb. I'm all about the image on this one. One of my all time favorite cards based on sheer aesthetics. A higher grade example would have depleted my war chest for REA, so low-grade was the move for me!

I noticed that card, it is really nice. If I collected D cards, I would be all over that. Nice pickup.

I actually had my eye on that one as a potential downgrade...and it wouldn't have been a big downgrade. I am not a high grade collector but the T205 Cobby is a stunning card when the aesthetics are there......I will never forget when I first saw the one I own, in Bryan Dec's case, at the first Oaks (RIP) show I did. I had almost no cash and I traded a set of Sawyer Biscuits cards +/- a few hundred dollars for it. I had to have it!!

Which Cabinets went for pretty fair prices? I wasn't bidding/tracking them all but I thought the ones I was looking at went at or above what I thought they would. I bid on a few... Maybe I'm a cheap-o? My limited knowledge Could be wrong... but I think 300-700 for photos of common ball players in street clothes is quite a bit. I liked the Mutrie the most, mainly because I'm used to seeing him in street clothes. It still went for more than I wanted to pay. The higher-end stuff had strong prices... In my opinion.

The N173 of Kelly was an unusually nice albumen image, in my opinion. I was the underbidder, and kind of regret not going a bit higher.

I thought the 1891 Joseph Hall Giants cabinet went high. It was also weird that they thought there would be argument over the missing '1' digit at the end of 1891. Perhaps they did that in order to make it seem unique, but Lew Lipset sold one of these a while back that had the entire '1891', and also almost an inch more of the top of the mount.

The other commons might have gone high because they were probably from one of the Ewings' estate.

I was able to pick up the McAleer cabinet for under the estimate. The photography on it looks just like the Just So cards to me. I will post more opinions about it when I get it.

I was the underbidder on the Pelicans team cabinet and the Pelicans Ewing. I did manage to get the "Anon" Pelican player card, I'm hoping to ID it and will post more about it later. It looks like Farmer Vaughn and Ed Cartright are on the team card as well as J Ewing and the anon player I got. Maybe the whole team card can be identified, as many n172 subjects played for the 1887 Pelicans.

That McAleer is outstanding. I bid on it, but really didn't have much to spend in this auction if I want to have a decent chance at anything in REA. I won the John Ewing New York Rembrandt. I would never have bid on it if I thought I could win the McAleer for that price, but couldn't afford both at the moment so had to settle for the one. Oh well--anyone here able to tell me whether Ewing is wearing a 1890 PL Giants uniform or a 1891 NL Giants uniform?

I thought it was interesting that the 1891 Jos. Hall N.Y. Giants cab used the same images in the composite as the individual Kensington art studio cabs. Did Jos. Hall buy the images from other studios to make their cabs similar to what Goodwin did to produce the n172-173 sets?

I won the 1887 Pelican cabinet. The team had many players who later were featured in the Old Judge set, including Count Campau, Farmer Vaughn, Jumbo Cartwright, and George McVey. The most interesting player, however, was the captain, Abner Powell. Powell invented the tarp to cover the field during rain, certainly an issue in New Orleans. He also came up with the idea of the rain check and organized the first Ladies Day. 1887 was the Pelican's first year in the Southern Association and they won the league championship that year.

Todd, thanks. I was also bidding at one point on the Rembrandt J Ewing that you won. I thought you got a really good deal on that one. I find this type of auction format fun, but it can be difficult to organize the bidder page and figure out what items are ending and what items will continue on. I had thrown in some bids to reset the clock on some items that I ended up winning early.

On OldJudge's Pelican cabinet. I was trying to cross reference baseball-reference.com's 1887 Pelicans roster with the images from the OJ book to determine who was on the cabinet. I think top row player 3 may be Farmer Vaughn? and 2nd row 2nd player Cartright? If someone can identify the 1st player in the top row let me know. I could not find an image of that person to match with a name. There was a Jake Aydelotte who started the 3rd most games on the mound behind Abner Powell and John Ewing. I could not find any photos of Aydelotte as it looks like 1887 was his only full season on record.

I had been following the W502 Ruth & Gehrig cards, and ended up winning them both for a price I was very happy with. Late Thursday night I threw a bid in on the e102 Wags, as it was at a price that I really liked. I felt it was the last increment before I would be overpaying - and it ended up sticking, as well.

I thought the selection of cabinets was amazing; a lot of pieces I've never seen before. Glad n54 members picked up some of the nicer items. I thought the New Orleans Pelicans piece went relatively cheap; nice grab Jay
I managed to pick up my favorite. Levi & Gold studios produced many cabs of Cinnci. Reds teams of the 1880s including some early images of Bid Mcphee.
I never had seen this item of an older Ewing probably near the end of his career.Thought it was humorous and very well done.

One of the items I was following was a ticket stub from Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game. I know that Wilt 100 ticket stubs are extreme rarities, but I was still shocked to see it go for $10,000+, considering it has been beat to hell, laminated and written on. The stub in this auction only sold for $600 less than a far nicer one sold for at Heritage two months ago.
