Twenty seven years ago this month, one of the great pitchers in BB passed away.....Leroy "Satchel" Paige.
It's a real shame that he didn't get a chance to play in the Major Leagues in his youth in the early 1930's. Who knows what his numbers would have been; and, what records he would have achieved ? I was fortunate enough to see him pitch for Cleveland (1948-49) and St Louis (1951-53). His double loop wind-up was a sight to see. And, I have always said that one cannot have enough Paige cards. Shown here are the 5 in my 1949 Bowman sets. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1949 LEAF card....Paige's 1st (rookie) BB card. ![]() ![]() TED Z Last edited by tedzan; 06-18-2009 at 10:04 AM. |
