Honoring Satchel Paige....show/tell us of your Paige items
Twenty seven years ago this month, one of the great pitchers in BB passed away.....Leroy "Satchel" Paige.
It's a real shame that he didn't get a chance to play in the Major Leagues in his youth in the early 1930's. Who knows what his numbers would have been; and, what records he would have achieved ? I was fortunate enough to see him pitch for Cleveland (1948-49) and St Louis (1951-53). His double loop wind-up was a sight to see. And, I have always said that one cannot have enough Paige cards. Shown here are the 5 in my 1949 Bowman sets. <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/aleroypaige49bthree.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/aleroypaige49btwo.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/autogsatchelpaige.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> 1949 LEAF card....Paige's 1st (rookie) BB card. <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/paige2.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd339/tz1234zaz/paigeb.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> TED Z |

Paige....or is it Page ? ?
"Satch" was born Leroy Robert Page. His Mom changed their name to Paige in the early 1930's.

Here's Satchel's Exhibit card, which must be the best bargain among the few cards of Paige that were issued while he was playing ...

There are so many reproductions of the Browns clip of Paige that the value of original ones have taken a hit. This is a real one.

This is the only handwritten Paige letter that I have ever seen, so was obviously elated to pick it up. There is one other letter that I know of, but it is typed. This one is signed in the body of the letter (as a third-person reference!). Letterhead dates it to the 1968-69 period.
