Hey guys,

A buddy of mine just called me from the road. He found an envelope with a letter from Mickey Mantle's Holiday Inn at a flea market. It is just a typical letter from someone to someone else, but he thought I might like it because of the logo on the envelope. He didn't remember what year it was cancelled.

Are these things easy to find? How much is too much to pay for something like this? He hasn't bought it yet, but will be passing through there again next week so I got time to answer.

i would only pay a minimal amount($1-$3) as they are fairly common and not much demand.

There is a huge amount of esoteric Mantle propaganda out there.....If you buy it, but it because you like it, not necessarily to resell...and you will be safe...With that being said if you only pay $10 or less for something you don't have much liability.....regards

I have several matchbooks/covers (which I also collect) from Mickey Mantles Holiday in Inn Joplin. Most are common and sell in the $25 range, there are a couple variations that sell for about double.

Some like to collect with mathches in-tact but the prefered way is without....just the cover.

Fun and inexpensive way to collect Mantle items.

Thanks for the input...he was able to buy the envelope / letter and two Life mags with Mickey on the cover for $15. Good deal, I think. Got the goods this morning. I like the letterhead and agree that it is a "cheap thrill".

I am right there with you. I got this matchbox and a menu for about $25....Cheap thrills are cool...(I think the menu might have an original auto but not sure)

Even the Dimaggio Grotto has color and pose variations.

OT: The tough sports matchbooks are from boxing. The oversize Louis vs Schmelling (sp)fight w/ printed matches and some ultra rare Dempsey resturant real photo double covers ($100+ ea). I've only seen two in the last 7 years. I should scan and show them on the boxing forum.
