Default Card Grading Companies Using AI to Identify Type Of Card

In the last few weeks, I have seen multiple posts about recently grading cards being mislabeled, specifically the wrong type of card.

Are any grading companies using AI to identify the card type? If not, are there plans to? This seems like an easy fix.

Definitely plenty of eBay listings use AI software that incorrectly identifies cards. Almost always selects the most expensive lookalike too. For instance, 1970 Topps gets listed as 1970 Topps Cloth Stickers, 1978 Topps gets listed as 1978 Topps Zest, etc.

This is true even when the software has access to card backs that look entirely different.

The assumption that advanced technology provides the desired result can be fallacious.

I'm sure many of you have been misled by GPS or know someone that will always rely on GPS rather than follow your accurate directions, not to say it isn't helpful at times.

The A in AI stands for artificial, not actual intelligence. I suppose the "A" could be replaced by "True or False" Intelligence, not to say it doesn't have many useful applications. I'm just not ready to turn my brain off to save the batteries.

Card AI is pretty good but not super accurate. Feel free to try a custom GPT I made that does just that https://chatgpt.com/g/g-6Xukfe94M-grademycard

At what step is this happening?

You submit what you're claiming to have and PSA/SGC (not used another grader, myself) confirms what they're being submitted as...so that's 2 points of where a card can be identified by 2 different parties.

I would be wary of anyone grading cards who isn't familiar with cards in general. It would take me seconds to identify 99% of all baseball cards put in front of me.

If they are its not working.
I had PSA try to refund me back my money because they didnt know what a 1934 Annis Furs set was. Even though they have a set registry for it.
I had to go back and forth with them to provide information on the set.
Needless to say, it finally got graded.

Well if they start using any kind of intelligence, it will be a plus.

+1.
AI would probably be better than many graders!

I wondered why 1952 Topps cream back cards keep popping up as gray backs - which are more expensive. Seller told me it was his eBay selling software

When you use the eBay automated listing tool which creates and fills listing information from your scans, it lets you choose "front" or "front and back" images when you upload. So that makes me think that just the front is used for identification and the back isn't used, but can be uploaded at the same time just for convenience.

It will miss things like back color, O-Pee-Chee vs Topps, anything that's not completely obvious from the front...and even sometimes things that are completely obvious.
