Default Mickey Mantle Debut ticket sold on eBay

Mickey Mantle Debut ticket sold on eBay. Hard to believe 14.5K is a steal but it appears that someone got a good deal. 15 bidders placed 76 bids. Thoughts?

Hate to disagree with my buddy Mike, but I don’t consider $14K for a 1” x 2” piece of cardboard a “good deal.”

Also, keep in mind that Opening Day games are usually very well attended.
Scarce?
In the big scheme of things, this ticket should be much easier to find then any of the next few games at home....

Opening Day tickets and World Series tickets are never scarce

I agree that even the eBay price is excessive. The pop report (FWW) is 18 with the highest graded being a 3. I believe that 3 sold during Covid for 141K. I realize things have cooled considerably since then but I have to believe this would sell for much more than this eBay sale. I think supply is definitely less than the demand.

I have to agree with Mike here. Just because should be easier to find doesn't mean it is and the population definitely shows that.

I think this fell victim to the $10k limit that possibly suppressed the final price on the Koufax debut ticket discussed else where on this forum.

I was corresponding with someone who in a ticket expert and he felt that at a big auction house it would go for 3x to 4x more than it went for.

People might not consider it a good deal based on what they would be interested in paying for it, but if the buyer can sell if for 3x the amount they bought it for... it's a pretty good day at the office.

At the right auction, with the right bidders, and that one guy that has the funds and has to have it, the sky's the limit. Otherwise, the novelty of the stub appeals to about 1% of 1% of people. I'm sure it will come back for sale as soon as it is back and labeled at psa. The high bidder hoping that one guy probably didn't see the auction

I think it’s more of a market correction. The prices of a couple of years ago were driven by a fear of missing out. I think that the market is more realistic now. That being said there are a number of tickets that will always be desired by collectors. This Mantle debut being one of them. Tickets related to Robinson, Mantle, Ruth, Gehrig, Aaron, Mays, Clemente, Koufax, and other inner circle HOFers should still be safe bets. Did you see this lot sold on eBay recently? It had one full Griffey debut in it. 40K? Crazy in my opinion and further evidence that this Mantle was under valued.

Steve, I respectfully disagree. I think tickets are as strong as ever. Yes, there's been some corrections here & there, but I follow tickets and bid on a lot of examples, and often get blown out on many of them.

This Mantle debut went under the radar, and was not properly titled.

I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement. LOL.

I think tickets/stubs got an insane bounce during Covid from Darren Rovell, who tweeted daily about tickets and showed off many of his cool tickets. I think he drove some irrational exuberance in this nook of the market.

The Mantle ticket didn't go under the radar. For it's condition and being ungraded it landed about where it should have.

Once graded it'll bump it to a 18k-20k ticket.

So "IF" the buyer of it plans to slab it, and "IF" they plan to sell it they'll make a few grand, but that's the case with most tickets, slab 'em and value goes up.

If you think this is a 40-50k ticket, HIGHLY doubtful. I personally don't care about the condition of rare significant tickets but guys who spend 50k and up sure do. They'd want a better example than this one.

Apparently this is the only Griffey debut full-ticket known in existence. (I'm not an expert, but that was what I was told on it)

I heard the same. Modern tickets still scare me. I worry that there are ticket brokers out there with a tub of forgotten unsold full tickets tucked away on a shelf in the garage.

I’m not sure I agree with this statement. Ticket prices peaked a few years ago and have dropped dramatically over the past couple of years. There are a few exceptions, but overall prices have gone down a ton from the peak. Yes, they are still higher than they were pre-COVID, but most high dollar have declined a lot over the past two years.

Exactly. Rovell is essentially trying to prop up the ticket market most likely due to his own self interest. Just my opinion, but his posts usually do not correspond to pricing.

When I said under the radar, I meant due to the fact it wasn't titled properly. No mention of Mantle's debut. That's a HUGE miss for the listing.

Most (but not all), but most tickets are down, and not only from 2022, but here's an example of down just from earlier in 2024 until now.

Same exact ticket sells at REA in Spring 2024 for $1260, sells again at REA in Fall 2024, and slabbed by PSA, (so much for slabbing adding value) for $690.

The consignor really took a bath on that one. They win it in Spring, pay to get it graded, resell 6 months later, and get killed on it. Ouch.

Fear not however if you missed out on this one, pretty sure I know the winner, and pretty sure you will see it on Ebay in 2-3 weeks for $2500.

Oh yeah, that guy who marks everything up 4 to 10 times and sits on it for eternity. The problem with developing a reputation like that is anytime I run across his items, I dont even bother trying to negotiate as I know he probably only paid 20% of the list price.

"Hats off" as i never knew...

:

Voilà
A French word that is used to express that something is being presented or shown to someone, or to express pleasure with something that has just been made or obtained. It is pronounced "vwä-ˈlä" or "vwah-LAH". The word is a contraction of "vois là", which literally means "see there".

Wallah
An Islamic expression that is used to convey the seriousness of a truth claim. It is used as an oath-taking by swearing by God that what is being said is the absolute truth. The word is short for "wayat Allah", which literally translates to "I swear by God".

Side question - how much does it cost to get a ticket like that graded/authenticated by PSA ?

Looks like someone gave you some incorrect info.

Another one just sold at Goldin this past weekend, this one was Auto'd:

https://goldin.co/item/ken-griffey-j...JkSW5kZXgiOjN9

Ebay Unsigned 10/14/24 - $40k (buyer still has yet to get graded....the fact that they have not means they either are getting it auto'd first, or PSA slow as always)

Goldin Signed 12/28/24 - $52k

52K?! I love Griffey and appreciate tickets and what they represent but that seems crazy to me.
