Since 1900, which three pitchers had the best single-season WAR (according to BRef) but are NOT in the Hall of Fame?

For some reason my brain is stuck on a few Tigers single season work-horses, so I'm going to go with Mickey Lolich, Denny McLain and Mark Fidrych.

Clemens and Gooden are indeed two of the three:

Gooden 1985 12.2 WAR
Clemens 1997 11.9 WAR

One more to go...

Smokey Joe's best was 10.2 WAR. Guidry and Fidrych both had 9.6 WAR seasons.

Kershaw? I mean it's unlikely with these guys now getting fewer starts but he did have some insane years.

Great guess - he's actually #4 (11.8 WAR in 1971).

Still one missing name in the top three...

Kershaw's highest WAR season was only 8.1 (2013). Only 236 innings - which actually now seems high for the present state of the game.

Flailing. Ron Bryant had that one massive year. Steve Stone. Orel Hersheiser. Saberhagen. Probably going to be someone at the turn of the century.

Good guesses but no. Two hints:

1) Definitely not "turn of the century" but pre-war

2) His team won the world series that season.

Would not have got him without the World Series hint. My first guesses were Dolf Luque and Dizzy Trout.

Luque is #6 on the list. Quite a season he had in 1923!

It was over 100 years ago, but I am still pissed that Comisky stopped pitching Cicotte in 1919 because he didn't want to pay his bonus for 30 wins.
