Is the width really this variable? Don't know the issue well.

E90-1 border width is not that variable. But as an offshoot, the card now possesses four sharp corners.
Here is my Holy Cobb with original borders intact. Brian |

Is that the infamous "Annie Oakley" Cobb? Thrown in the air outside a dusty western bar in the middle of a hot afternoon on a bet she couldn't put a shot right through the Georgia Peaches midsection? |

The higher the grade the smaller the card, always. It is a widely accepted theory that smaller cards simply do not sustain as much wear.
Owning cards like the 7 requires massive indifference, zero knowledge of cards or an amazing ability to deny reality.

In a perfect world the PSA 7 would cost less than a beat-up but intact example. Because the PSA 7 example contains less paper material than a card that is its original size.

All they have to do is crack it out, retrim to make it better centered, and resubmit! Voila.... a 9!!!!

High grade E and T cards rarely seem to fill out their psa holders compared to their lower grade counterparts. Really makes one skeptical.

Yeah. There was a period maybe 15 years ago we were seeing small caramel cards in high grade constantly. Largely I suspect from the same source but that's another matter. I used to call them Es in Ts -- the real caramel cards were all in baggies then but these seemed to fit just fine in the T size holders. It really did, and does, make you want to say eff it it's all bullshit.

Yes it is bullshit but very few will not collect PSA slabs because of it. Seriously once you can really not care about value and just buy ungraded cards the hobby actually becomes really fun again. |

I know very little about this set, but I'd still wager my big toe that the 7 has been trimmed.

That 7 does appear to be trimmed. But there is some variability in the dimensions of unaltered E90-1s. Home Run Baker is an example. Look at the VCP records and you'll see many examples.

Not all can look like this one! There are some variances in the borders but, pointy corners with little borders is a recipe for a disaster. .

Here's my Cy for comparison. He looks a little skinnier than yours but I don't think he's been under the knife:

My side borders are maybe just slightly larger, but also have no evident tampering. My Cy did get into a knife fight and got it straight in the neckhole. Leon's incredible E90-1 Cy is a freak of candy card nature. Brian |
