I’ve posted one of these before and forgot what was said about them. Any history and dating would be awesome. One came from Hunt, one from an EBay scrap book and the other I’m not sure about.

The Utica Cdv is pictured in Mark Rucker’s book, Base Ball Cartes and was auctioned in a sale of some of his stuff in 1996, which notes it was also used in the Ken Burns film. He dated it 1878, and said it was a member of the International Association and many members played in the NL. Can’t help with names but this should give a start.
I sent you a pm for more info on the other 2. The top one is definitely post 1879, I guess mid 1880’s.or so. Might know more if I can find the photographers. Last edited by bgar3; 02-26-2024 at 05:06 PM. |

Could not find anything great on the photographer Kopke, but I would guess mid 1880’s also. I think the darker mount and size is indicative of that time period or later. Also, it is not really clear but I think I see a mask on the knee of one of the players, making this likely post 1879 and probably a little later.

For more on Utica, see 1878 Utica pent ups, international league on threads of the game, where your photo is used with a number of identifications. There are other sites with info, even some stats for players and you will confirm several did play in the NL.

Thank you for the information which helps a lot. Been slowly selling off some 19th century items as it doesn’t fit my collecting tastes now. REA will be the benefactors of this group along with some other nice items which I do know about.

I had about 80-85 baseball cdvs at one time. I frequently see old friends pop up.
