Default Old Judge Cabinets in REA

Looking at the N173 realizations in REA it appears that these cards are getting increased interest. Given their relative rarity and generally better image quality than N172s I still think they are undervalued versus their more diminutive brothers. Was anyone on the board luck enough to win any of these?

The final hammer on Big Ed was absolutely insane

I was thinking the same thing, Jay. It's nice to see some higher prices for 19th century cards. $50K plus for the trimmed Delahanty is impressive and the prices for the Kelly and O'Rourke weren't too shabby either. This is the first thread related to 19th century to be started in a long time.

I was somewhat surprised by the Delahanty too. However, his cabinets are amongst the scarcest of all N173s and he is arguably the greatest 19th century player.

That makes me throw up a bit in my mouth.

That Big Ed used to be mine but I sold it during the pandemic…to help fund a pool build. I never would have expected that sort of price given the hack job on the bottom. Don’t get me wrong, I still made out quite well, but nothing even remotely close to the hammer!!

Congrats to whoever won the George Gore N173, it’s a beautiful cabinet!
I took it to $2.5k but was outbid 20 minutes later and ended up the underbidder. I still managed to pick up a Newsboy cabinet so it wasn’t a total loss.

I won a few good ones...and drove up prices on others.

Thanks Paul! I was shocked I didn't get pushed harder on the Gore. I've never seen a nicer image quality on one. Can't wait to get it in hand.

That Radbourn is a beauty! And I'm hoping their day isn't coming anytime soon. I'd like to pick up several more before I'm priced out.

And certainly, in contrast to his statistics, the least common in N172 and N173.

I'd recommend an N173 to everyone just as a type card. The photo quality on the cards is amazing. I was lucky enough to get two of them many years ago for a great price. I won one off of Ebay for a very good price, then saw the seller had one that didn't get a bid, so I made a lower offer to see if he would take it and combine ship the two cards. No scans available right now, but as someone who has collected Old Judge cards since I was a teen, I can't recommend enough for people to get at least one N173 card for their collection.

The primary reason for the superiority of N173 images is that they are first generation photos while N172s are second generation photos.

Is that true for the Kelly as well? That one doesn’t seem to be as crisp as the others

All old judge cabinets were made directly from the glass plate negative. All N172s are rephotographed cabinet size prints. So yes, it is true for all cabinets. What happened to the cabinet over the last 135 years will impact how it looks today.
Think about that--135 years. I guarantee that neither of us will look that good at 135.

Jay- You can streamline this whole thing by just posting these cards in BST. It just seems disingenuous (and a lot of work) to spin up a thread talking about how interested you are in recent N173 sales then subtly dropping a few you've been trying to sell for years

I have not seen many N173 Old Judge Cabinets on the BST. Can someone post a link to Jay's? I would love to see what is available.

For those that couldn’t tell, Brian was joking…but admittedly, I took a quick look on the BST…just in case!!

Wishful thinking on the part of everyone who was ogling Jay’s collection of OJ Cabinets…

I pretty much only collect HOFers, despite some images above, so no. I suspect that Indianapolis cabinets are scarcer than a lot of teams because it was a smaller market (less potential people ordering) and had a lack of super stars. I would guess that the easiest Indy cabinets to find would be Glasscock, Denny and Hines.

Apparently the Metropolitan Museum of Art has the real trove (152). I'd love to find this one somehow, someday.

I believe that those are proofs. That Healy is a beauty. That Burdick guy had a pretty good little collection.

Michael, If the day comes that you decide to sell/trade that, I'd definitely be interested. I'd even be willing to let that Kid Baldwin we battled for go to you in a trade deal.

Regardless, that's a beauty and thanks for posting the image!
